Die Kelten – mächtige Herrscher im Zentrum Europas
Celts – powerful lords in the heart of Europe
Vor 2500 Jahren ist das Saarland mit Luxemburg, Lothringen,
Rheinland-Pfalz und dem belgischen Wallonien ein wichtiges
Zentrum Europas. Hier leben Kelten. Ihre Fürsten sind gefürchtete
Krieger.
2,500 years ago Saarland, together with Luxembourg, Lorraine,
Rhineland-Palatinate and Wallonia in Belgium, form an important
European centre. Celts live here. Their princes are much feared
as warriors. They lay the foundations for a new culture, the Latène
culture. Their smiths have the skills required to forge iron into
terrifying weapons and innovative tools. For the fi st time the exhibition
presents a comprehensive insight into a forgotten chapter
of our culture. More than 150 groups of exhibits bring 800 years
of Celtic innovation, culture and power to life in the 6,000m 2 of
the blower hall.
Die größten Magier …
The greatest sorcerers …
The druids are the cult and intellectual elite of late Celtic society.
They are priests, judges and keepers of knowledge. They pass
on this knowledge by word of mouth from generation to generation,
and today they still catch the imagination. We know very little
about their life and works. The Roman author Pliny describes
druids in white robes cutting mistletoe from oak trees with
a golden sickle. There are no surviving images of druids from
Celtic times.
Der goldene Armring von Rodenbach, um 400 v. Chr., ist einer der bedeutendsten Funde
der Latènezeit, Gold, Durchmesser 9,37 cm, Historisches Museum der Pfalz, Speyer
The golden arm ring from Rodenbach, about 400 BC. It is on of the most important fi nds
of the Latène period, gold, diameter 9.37 cm, Historisches Museum der Pfalz, Speyer
Die mächtigsten Herrscher …
The mightiest princes …
Keltische Fürsten beherrschen die Region ab dem 5. Jahrhundert
v. Chr.
Goldschmuck. Fürstliche Frauen stehen ihnen darin nicht
nach. Die Ausstellung zeigt große Goldschätze und herausragende
fürstliche Insignien.
Celtic princes are lords of the region from the 5 th century BC.
They have connections with centres in southern Europe as far
away as Greece. Grave goods of gold are an imposing expression
of the power and wealth of the Celtic elite. The warrior princes are
buried in large burial chambers beneath monumental tumuli. Their
graves are furnished with richly decorated swords, war chariots,
bronze vessels and exquisite jewellery, and those of the princesses
are just as impressive. The exhibition presents great gold treasures
and outstanding princely insignia.
The Celts developed the art of forging weapons to a previously unknown level.
Iron means power.
Die schärfsten Klingen …
The keenest blades …
The Celts forge blades that are the height of contemporary
technology. "Celtic iron" is proverbial.
Iron and steel still dominate the modern world. The Celts create
iron tools that still have the same shape today, as well as deadly
weapons. The Celts bring to life one of the fi rst highlights of iron
technology at the world’s most important industrial site for the
production of iron, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger
Hütte. The Celts founded a tradition of innovative iron technology
that sill survives in the region today ager 2,500 years.
Goldener Kahn aus dem Grabhügel eines Kriegers. 480–300 v. Chr., Frühlatènezeit,
Gold, Länge 7 cm, Keltenmuseum Hallein, Österreich
Wie lebten die Kelten in der Eisenzeit?
How did the Celts live in the Iron Age?
The life of the Celts is full of mysteries. How do the Celts live,
what do they eat, what are their clothes, tools and weapons like?
Archaeology uses modern methods to solve these mysteries.
In the "hands on" section of the exhibition Celtic life in the Iron
Age comes to life. Here you can immerse yourself in the world
of the Celts and the way they lived. You can use reconstructions
of tools, feel fabrics and furs, and so experience more of the
Celts’ lives. There is a "hands on" section in the exhibition for
young visitors.
