aber kleinen Schweizer Sattlerbetrieb

de Sede, die
heute auf der ganzen Welt
Freunde und Liebhaber hat.
Bei aller Entwicklung, bei aller
Resonanz weit über die
Schweiz hinaus sind wir uns
immer treu geblieben: als

auf Kleinserienfertigung
bis hin zu individuellen Speziallösungen

What is the source of
its inimitable effect, of its exclusiveness?
It is the subtle marriage of traditional
Swiss craftsmanship,
uncompromising devotion to
detail and the contemporary
elegance of its lines.
Since 1965, this has been the
philosophy behind every piece
of de Sede furniture, thanks to
whose character every room
it graces becomes something
truly unique.
It was this that resulted in a
small yet highly skilled saddler’s
workshop giving birth to the
exclusive de Sede furniture
brand, which is today renowned
throughout the world.
But despite this growth and
the acclaim the company
enjoys far beyond the borders
of Switzerland, we have
always remained true to ourselves:
as a specialist furniture
maker who focuses on
small series production and
individualised solutions. And
as an expert in the art of exquisite
leatherwork.

‹Substantia› bedeutet
‹Das, woraus
etwas besteht›.
Die Substanz macht also den
Unterschied. Damit Sie de Sede
und die Art, wie de Sede
Möbel fertigt, richtig verstehen,
möchten wir Ihnen ein
wenig von unserer Tradition,
unserer Geschichte, unserem
Weg berichten.
Wir sind im Jahr 1965. Der von
der New York Times ‹Early
Bird› getaufte erste kommerzielle
Nachrichtensatellit startet
von den USA aus ins All.
Der Mont-Blanc-Tunnel, der
längste Straßentunnel der
Welt, ist endlich fertig und
verbindet Frankreich und Italien
durch einen Berg hindurch.
Die Beatles veröffentlichen in
England ihr heiß ersehntes
fünftes Album: ‹Help!›.
Und in der Schweiz, genauer
in Klingnau im Kanton Aargau,
entsteht aus einem kleinen,
aber feinen Sattlerbetrieb die
Manufaktur de Sede. Erst in
der Schweiz, dann international:
de Sede fällt auf.
Durch Entwürfe von kompromissloser,
progressiver Eleganz.
Durch die Liebe zum Detail,
die Schweizer Handwerkskunst.
Durch einen neu de fi nierten
Standard für Sitzkomfort. Und:
durch einen ganz besonderen
Umgang mit Leder.
Im de Sede Atelier entstehen
die Entwürfe für Klassiker wie
das Daybed DS–80 oder den
Drehsessel DS–51. Externe
Designerinnen und Designer
wie Ueli Berger, Eleonore
Peduzzi-Riva, Heinz Ulrich
und Klaus Vogt entwickeln für
de Sede die modulare Element-Garnitur
DS–600, die
sich viele Meter lang und
immer wieder neu durch den
Raum schlängelt. Ubald Klug
entwirft die Phantasie-Bausteine
DS–1025: intelligente
Elemente, mit denen plötzlich
Hügel, Pyramiden oder kleine
Bergketten zum Sitzen gestaltet
werden können.
Unsere Möbel halten Einzug
in die besten Hotels und Restaurants
der Welt. Botschaften,
Opernhäuser, große internationale
Organisationen, die
wichtigen Banken und Unternehmen:
de Sede wird eine
Konstante anspruchsvoller
Interior-Konzepte.
Das Gleiche gilt für immer
mehr Privathäuser in aller
Welt. Menschen, die das

in der Schweiz entstehen. In

handwerklicher Tradition

Dinge zu sehen und zu gestalten.
Kosmopolitisch und international
ausgerichtet, von der
Schweiz aus in die Welt. Manche
nennen das ‹swissness›.
Mitgeprägt hat das Bild von
de Sede auch die von Hans
Eichenberger, Robert und
Peter Haussmann, Teo Jakob
und Kurt Thut gegründete
Vereinigung SWISS DESIGN.

24 Exemplare der heutigen
Ikone gingen seinerzeit als
Geschenk der Schweiz zur Geburt

All dies ist unsere Substanz,
die Tag für Tag, Entwurf für
Entwurf weiter angereichert
wird. Durch die Arbeit des
de Sede Designteams und
durch neue Konzepte von
Designern wie zum Beispiel
Philippe Bestenheider oder
Gordon Guillaumier.
Wir wollen uns nicht auf unserer
Tradition ausruhen. Wir
sehen sie vielmehr als eine
Heimat an, von der aus wir
immer wieder neu aufbrechen.
Um das lebendig zu halten,
was, auf den Punkt gebracht,
de Sede immer ausmachen
wird: Élégance Radicale.

is created›.
It is substance then that makes
all the difference. In order to
truly understand de Sede and
the way in which de Sede
manufactures furniture, we
would like to tell you a little
about our tradition, about
our history and the path we
have travelled.
Let us look back to the year
1965. The world’s first commercial
communications satellite
– dubbed ‹Early Bird›
by the New York Times – is
launched into space from the
USA. The Mont Blanc tunnel,
the longest road tunnel on
earth, is finally completed to
link France and Italy through
the mountains. In England, the
Beatles release their eagerly
awaited fifth album: ‹Help!›
And in Switzerland, or more
precisely in Klingnau in the
Canton of Aargau, the de Sede
company is born from a small
but highly skilled saddler’s
workshop.
de Sede soon starts making a
name for itself – first in Switzerland,
but then on the international
front, as well.
Thanks to designs of uncompromising
and progressive
elegance. Thanks to its devotion
to detail and to Swiss
craftsmanship. Thanks to a
redefinition of the standards
of seating comfort. And thanks
to our very special relationship
to leather.
The de Sede workshop sees
the birth of classics such as
the DS–80 daybed and the
DS–51 swivel chair. External
designers such as Ueli Berger,
Eleonore Peduzzi-Riva, Heinz
Ulrich and Klaus Vogt develop
for de Sede the modular
DS–600 seating system,
which snakes its way, metreslong,
through the room and
can be reshaped at will. Ubald
Klug designs the fantastically
formed elements of the
DS–1025: intelligent modules
that allow owners to construct
seating environments
resembling hills, pyramids or
tiny mountain ranges.
Our furniture finds a warm
welcome in the world’s top hotels
and restaurants. de Sede
becomes a firm favourite for
demanding interior concepts
in embassies, opera houses,
large international organisations,
major banks and corporations
everywhere.

The same is true for increasing
numbers of private homes
around the globe. More and
more people in search of
something out of the ordinary
discover the pleasure of being
seated by de Sede. Including a
number of Hollywood stars
and rock’n’roll legends.
de Sede could really only
have come into existence in
Switzerland. In a land where
from time immemorial a
strong tradition of timehonoured
craftsmanship has
gone hand in hand with a pro -
gressive and open-minded
temperament. The country
definitely has its own way of
looking at things and of shaping
them. Cos mopolitan and
international in orientation,
from Switzerland to the
world – a concept referred
to by many as ‹swissness›.
Thus, at the end of the 1990s,
it was both a logical and important
step for us to become
the only manufacturer to offer
the exciting designs of the
legendary SWISS DESIGN
association.
SWISS DESIGN, founded by
Hans Eichenberger, Robert
and Peter Haussmann, Teo
Jakob and Kurt Thut, helped
mould the de Sede image –
with creations like the HE–113
tubular steel chair and the famous
RH–304 ‹Unesco chair›.
When the latter was first produced,
24 copies of this contemporary
icon were sent to
Paris as a gift from Switzer land
to mark the birth of UNESCO.
All this makes up our substance,
which is further enriched
day by day, design by
design. Thanks to the work of
the de Sede Design Team and
to new concepts by designers
like Philippe Bestenheider and
Gordon Guillaumier.
But we are not content to rest
on the laurels of this tradition.
We see it more in terms of a
home base whence we constantly
set out anew in order
to keep alive what will al -
ways be the very essence of
de Sede: élégance radicale.

ÜBER PERFEKTION
ABOUT PERFECTION

ENN etwas
nicht mehr zu
verbessern ist,
spricht man von ‹Perfektion›.
Ein unmögliches Unterfangen?
Oder Träumerei? Für de Sede
ist ‹Perfektion› Ansporn, Anspruch,
Wertehaltung.
Der realistische Ausgangspunkt
dafür ist unsere gewachsene,
immer wieder verfeinerte und
perfektionierte Handwerkskunst.
Das ist die Seele eines
jeden de Sede Möbels.
Es ist die Sorgfalt, mit der wir
uns stets auch dem kleinsten
Detail widmen möchten. Der
Qualitätswille, der nicht nach
einer guten, sondern möglichst
nach der besten Lösung
strebt. Das kann man den
Möbeln von de Sede nicht nur
ansehen. Man kann es auch
fühlen, spüren, erleben.
Nicht zuletzt, indem man Platz
nimmt. Der Name de Sede
steht traditionell für perfekten
Sitzkomfort.
Damit dies so bleibt, fertigen
wir zu Beginn einer jeden Modellentwicklung
nach wie vor
einen aufwendigen Prototyp
im Maßstab 1:1 an. An ihm
wird so lange gearbeitet und
gefeilt, bis nicht nur die ideale
Form entstanden ist. Sondern
eben auch ein nicht mehr zu
verbessernder Komfort. Diese
Vorgehensweise ist aus unserer
Sicht unersetzlich.
Besonders deutlich wird unsere
Liebe zum Detail auch in
der Näherei. Wir wenden
Techniken und Verfahren an,
wie sie heute nur noch selten
eingesetzt werden. So wird
zum Beispiel die Lederhülle
beim Sessel DS–51 in vier
Stunden aufwendiger Handarbeit
genäht. Bis sie schließlich
perfekt passt.
Den Hang zur Finesse und zur
Genauigkeit spürt man natürlich
auch bei unseren De signern.
Gordon Guillaumier,
Designer des neuen de Sede
Sofas DS–60, zitiert in dem
Zusammenhang gerne Mies
van der Rohe: ‹Gott steckt im
Detail.› Werfen Sie einmal
einen genaueren Blick auf das
DS–60: Sie werden feststellen,
dass Gordon Guillaumier
weiß, wovon er spricht.
In diesem Sinne hat ein Möbel
von de Sede dann auch wirklich
nichts zu verbergen. Ganz
im Gegenteil. Alle unsere
Sofas und Sessel geben von
der Unterseite aus den Blick
frei auf ihre Konstruktion.
Die Suche nach Perfektion
gilt in besonderem Maße
auch für die von uns eingesetzten
Leder. Nur die feinsten,
makellosen Häute finden
ihren Weg nach Klingnau.
Denn die aufwendige Selektion
durch den de Sede Lederexperten
beginnt bereits in
der Gerberei.
Mit geschultem Blick und
feinem Tastsinn wird anschließend
bei de Sede jede
einzelne Haut noch einmal
Zentimeter für Zentimeter
kontrolliert.
Stimmen Farbe und Oberflächenstruktur
der verschiedenen
Häute wirklich überein?
Gibt es versteckte Fehler im
Leder, möglicherweise verursacht
durch eine schlecht
verheilte Verletzung des Tieres?
Gemeinsam mit unseren Gerbereien
unternehmen wir alles,
um am Ende ein Leder zu erhalten,
das so beschaffen ist, dass
es die Bezeichnung ‹de Sede
Leder› verdient.
Schließlich sind unsere von
Hand gefertigten Möbel für all
diejenigen bestimmt, die eben
nicht den Kompromiss suchen.

HEN something
just cannot be
improved upon,
we talk of ‹perfection›.
An impossible undertaking?
A daydream? For de Sede,
‹perfec tion› means stimulus,
incentive and value.
The realistic point of departure
for this are our es t ab lished
and continually enhanced and
perfected skills of craftsmanship,
which comprise the
soul of every piece of de Sede
furniture.
It is the painstaking care which
we constantly devote to the
very smallest detail. The quest
for quality – striving not merely
for a good solution, but for
the best there can possibly be.
This is not just seen in de Sede
furniture, it is also felt, sensed
and experienced.
Particularly when you sit in it,
for the de Sede name traditionally
stands for perfection
in seating comfort.
To ensure that this continues
to hold good, we always produce
a fully-functional, fullscale
prototype whenever we
start developing a new model.
We work and experiment
on this not just for as long as
it takes to create the ideal
form, but for as long as we
need to ensure that the seating
comfort cannot be improved
upon. This is an approach that
we are convinced is vital and
irreplaceable.
Our devotion to detail becomes
particularly evident in
our sewing workshop, where
we make use of techniques
and procedures which are
rarely used elsewhere today.
For example: it takes no less
than four hours to sew the
leather shell for the DS–51
armchair by hand to ensure
that it is a perfect fit.
Needless to say, the same
commitment to exactitude
and accuracy is also evident in
our designers. On this subject,
Gordon Guillaumier, the creator
of our new de Sede DS–60
sofa, likes to quote Mies van
der Rohe: ‹God is in the
detail.› Take a close look at the
DS–60 and you will immediately
see that Gordon
Guillaumier has hit the nail
right on the head.
All this means that furniture
from de Sede really has nothing
to conceal. In fact, the very
opposite: one glance under
any of our sofas and easy
chairs reveals exactly how
they are constructed.
The striving for perfection is
especially true in respect of
the leather that we use. Only
the finest hides, with not the
faintest blemish, find their way
to Klingnau, for de Sede’s
leather specialists begin their
rigorous selection process
right there in the tannery.
When it arrives at the de Sede
workshop, each hide is painstakingly
examined with a
trained eye and finely-honed
sense of touch centimetre
by centimetre.
Are the shade and surface
structure of the various hides
really identical? Are there hidden
defects in the leather that
might have been caused by a
poorly-healed injury?
Together with the tanneries,
we do everything possible to
guarantee that the leather we
finally process is truly excellent
enough to deserve the
name of ‹de Sede leather›.
For in the final analysis, every
item of hand-crafted fu r nit
ure we produce is intended
for people who are not wil l-
ing to ac cept the slightest
compromise.

ABOUT INNOVATION

IE gelingt es

Dies geht unseres Erachtens
dann, wenn Innovationen ein
fester Teil der Tradition sind.
Bei de Sede war es schon immer
die Kombination aus technischen
Kenntnissen und der
Bereitschaft, mit offenen Augen
und Ohren durch die Welt
zu gehen, die Innovationen
hervorgebracht hat.
Trends, Messen, Ausstellungen,
unsere erstklassigen Lieferanten,
Begegnungen, Erlebnisse …
Inspiration ist überall.
Und es sind natürlich die Designer,
von Haus aus Innovatoren,
die mit ihren Ideen
und Konzepten an uns herantreten
und so die Zukunft
von de Sede mitgestalten.
de Sede arbeitet hierzu immer
wieder mit der Avantgarde
der Zunft zusammen.
Diese Designer unterstützen
uns bei unserem Ziel, den
Kern der Marke de Sede –
Élégance Radicale – in unverwechselbaren
Formen und
Materialien auszudrücken.
Die Einzigartigkeit, die Ausgewogenheit
der de Sede Kollektion
entsteht am Ende dann
auch aus der Synthese von
italienischem, schweizerischem
und deutschem Design.
Ein Konzept, sei es noch so
gut und ausgereift, ist niemals
wirklich fertig. de Sede nutzt
in diesem Sinne prinzipiell die
Chance der technischen Weiterentwicklung.
Ein gutes Beispiel
ist unser Modell DS–140.
Die Drehsitztechnik des Sofas,
das sich mit zwei Handgriffen
in eine elegante Doppel-Relaxliege
verwandeln lässt,
wurde kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt
und verbessert und
wird heute unter anderem
auch in unserem Erfolgsmodell
DS–450 eingesetzt.
Dieses Prinzip gilt selbstverständlich
erst recht für unsere
Modelle mit elektrisch angetriebenen
Funktionen. Elektronik
sowie Akkutechnologie
entsprechen stets dem neusten
Stand der Technik.
Und auch den außerordentlichen
de Sede Sitzkomfort
entwickeln wir permanent
weiter. Durch die Auswahl
und Verbesserung der Polstermaterialien
und Komfortaufbauten.
Entwürfe wie das Daybed
DS–80 mit seiner damals
revo lutionären Patchwork-
Verarbeitung oder unsere
uni versellen Modulsysteme
wie das DS–600 und das
DS–76 waren immer Innovationen
ihrer Zeit. Das Sofa
DS–7 mit der weltweit ersten,
für de Sede patentierten
‹Klapp-Streck-Rückenmechanik›
galt und gilt ebenfalls als
echte Innovation.
Heute setzt zum Beispiel der
neue Sessel DS–315 von Philippe
Bestenheider Akzente.
Seine gegliederte Geometrie
wird durch eine 26 Meter lange
Handnaht unterstrichen, für
die eigens ein spezieller Lederfaden
entwickelt wurde.
Oder das neue Sofa und der
dazugehörige Sessel DS–60
von Gordon Guillaumier. Die

eleganten Linien werden
erst durch eine aufwendige
Metallrahmen-Konstruktion
möglich.
Manche Einrichtungskonzepte
wiederum werden erst durch
ein de Sede Möbel mit besonderer
Funktion möglich. Zum
Beispiel durch das seinerzeit
erste Sofa, dessen Rückenlehnen
sich um bis zu 360° verschieben
lassen: das DS–164
von Hugo de Ruiter. Mit dem
modularen Sitzsystem lassen
sich wieder und wieder neue
Platzsituationen gestalten.
Geborgenheit, Nähe, Offenheit,
Kommunikation. Immer
als Option, immer mit einem
Handgriff wandelbar.
Schritt machend sind wir traditionell
auch bei der Entwicklung
und Verarbeitung
unserer Lederqualitäten.
Bereits kurz nach der Gründung
im Jahr 1965 bringt
de Sede die erste Rein-Anilinleder-Kollektion
auf den
Markt. Im Anschluss daran
folgen die erste Riemchennaht
und die Einführung der
auf wendigen Fadenabheftung.
Als Meilenstein in der Polstermöbelherstellung
gilt auch
heute noch unsere bis zu einen
halben Zentimeter dicke
Lederqualität NECK. Ebenso
wie die Zickzacknaht mit
Chirurgenfaden. Eine Nähtechnik
für extrem dickes Leder,
die heute zwar nicht mehr
eingesetzt wird, Ende der
1970er Jahre jedoch zu ganz
neuen Möglichkeiten und Verarbeitungstechniken
führte.
Wie innovativ man bei der Entwicklung
von Ledern vorgehen
kann, zeigt heute in besonderem
Maße unsere Lederqualität
NATURALE. Der seidig-warme
Griff ist ein Naturereignis.
Das Thema ‹Leder und Innovation›
kultivieren wir im de Sede
Leder Lab. Hier setzen wir
alles daran, neue Qualitäten
und Details in der Ver arbeitung
zu erforschen und immer mehr
über dieses außer gewöhnliche

In the end, the uniqueness

de Sede collection springs
from a deft synthesis of Italian,
Swiss and German designs.
But however good and welldeveloped
it may be, a concept
is never truly concluded and
so, with this in mind, de Sede
exploits the advantages of ongoing
technical development.
A good example of this is our
DS–140 model. The swivelling
seat technology of this sofa,
which can be converted with
two simple manipulations
into an elegant double lounger
for comfortable relaxation,
is constantly being
further developed and enhanced
and is also used today
in other models, such as our
successful DS–450.
Needless to say, this principle
is doubly true when it comes
to models with electricallypowered
functions, whose
electronics and battery technology
are always state-ofthe-art.
We even strive to develop the
already extraordinary level of
de Sede seating comfort still
further, with new and improved
upholstery materials
and comfort enhancements.
In their time, designs like the
DS–80 daybed, with its then
revolutionary patchwork finish,
and universal modular
systems, such as the DS–600
and DS–76, all ranked as innovations.
The DS–7 sofa
with the world’s first fold-out
adjustable back mechanism –
patented by de Sede – is still
as much a genuine innovation
now as it was when it was
first introduced.
Today, it is furniture like the
new DS–315 easy chair from
Philippe Bestenheider that
sets the tone, thanks to its
structured geometry underscored
by a hand-sewn seam
fully 26 metres in length, for
which it was necessary to develop
a special leather thread.
Then again there is the new
DS–60 sofa and matching
armchair created by Gordon
Guillaumier, whose elegant
lines were only made possible
by the use of a sophisticated
metal-framed construction.
Many interior design concepts
would not be feasible without
de Sede furniture with practical
functions. For example, the
first sofa of its time with backrests
that could be moved
through a full 360°: the
DS–164 by Hugo de Ruiter.
This modular seating system
makes it possible to create
ever-new sitting positions.
Snug comfort, intimate closeness,
openness, communication
– all readily available at
the flick of a wrist.

We have also traditionally
been a trendsetter in developing
the qualities of leather
we use.
Shortly after the company’s
inception in 1965, for instance,
de Sede put the first pure
aniline leather collection on
the market. This was followed
by its first use of lacing to join
sections of leather and then
by the introduction of our
elaborate technique of tucked
cross stitching.
A milestone in the manufacture
of upholstered furniture
to this very day is our NECK
leather, which is up to half a
centimetre in thickness. As
was zigzag stitching using surgical
thread – a sewing technique
for extremely thick
leather which, although no
longer used today, opened up
new opportunities and processing
techniques at the end
of the 1970s.
Just how innovative it is possible
to be in developing new
qualities of leather is eloquently
shown today by our
NATURALE leather, whose
silky warm feel is a true natural
phenomenon.
We cultivate innovation in
leather in the de Sede Leather
Lab, where we experiment
with new qualities of leather
and processing methods in
order to discover more
about this exceptional material
and the wealth of potential
it affords.

Obwohl ich schon sehr lange
dabei bin und wirklich jeden
Tag mit Leder zu tun habe,
muss ich deutlich Ja sagen. Leder
ist ein Naturmaterial und
somit immer wieder anders.
Was zum Beispiel die Zeichnung
von Narben und Poren
angeht, entdecke selbst ich
sozusagen wieder und wieder
‹neue Bilder›. Es ist einfach so,
dass keine Haut der anderen
gleicht. Das fasziniert mich.
Das gilt auch für die Berührungen,
den Griff. Ein wertvolles
Leder zu fühlen, zu spüren,
ist und bleibt etwas ganz Besonderes.
Ich kann mir nicht
vorstellen, dass dies einmal
Routine werden könnte. Vielleicht
ist es ein bisschen wie
mit wertvollen Weinen.
WOHER KOMMEN DIE
LEDER, DIE BEI DE SEDE
VERARBEITET WERDEN?
WORAUF ACHTEN SIE BE-
SONDERS?
Wir achten besonders auf
Häute von großen, gesunden
Tieren. Tiere, die ihr Leben
lang gut gehalten wurden. Gut
ernährt, gepflegt, mit dem
nötigen Respekt behandelt.
Das macht die Auswahl nicht
ge rade groß. Für de Sede
kommen in diesem Sinne nur
Bullenhäute aus Skandinavien,
Süddeutschland sowie der
Schweiz und Österreich in
Frage. Das ist die einzige Qualität,
die wir einsetzen können.
Sie erfüllt unsere Ansprüche
und die unserer Kunden.

Erst einmal werden die Häute
per Kühltransport vom
Schlacht hof in die Gerberei geliefert.
Das geschieht aus ökologischen
Gründen übrigens
‹ungesalzen›. In der Gerberei
werden die Häute dann in vielen
aufwendigen Prozessen mit
natürlichen Mineralsalzen, mit
edlen Fetten, Ölen und hochwertigen
Farben nach und
nach in de Sede Leder verwandelt.
Im Anschluss inspiziere
ich – noch in der Gerberei –
ganz genau jede einzelne der
so entstandenen Lederhäute.
Die aus unserer Sicht geeigneten
werden von mir signiert
und schließlich nach Klingnau,
zu de Sede geschickt. In Klingnau
prüfen wir dann später
noch einmal akribisch jede einzelne
Haut, die ankommt.
DE SEDE BIETET GANZ
VER SCHIEDENE LEDER-
QUALITÄTEN AN. WO LIE-
GEN DIE MARKANTESTEN
UNTERSCHIEDE?
Kurz gesagt: in der Dicke des
Leders, dem Narbenbild und
dem Finish. Die Dicke des Leders
reicht von 1,1 Millimetern
bis zu einem halben Zentimeter.
Da spürt man schon einen Unterschied.

Leder wiederum reicht

NUVO – bis grob
strukturiert. Das ist dann
unsere Lederqualität NECK,
die ist tatsächlich einen halben
Zentimeter dick.

Meiner Meinung nach gewinnen
alle edlen Natur materialien
mit der Zeit noch
mehr an Charakter. Das
unter schei det sie deutlich
von industriell hergestellten
Wegwerfprodukten. Ein wirklich
hochwertiges Leder bekommt
mit den Jahren und
Jahr zehn ten eine regelrechte
Geschichte. Es lebt sozusagen
mit einem. Ich finde das spannend
– und schön.
GIBT ES LEDER, DIE BE -
SON DERS SCHÖN ALTERN?
Ich denke hier zum Beispiel
an unsere weiche, samtig
an mutende Lederqualität
NATURALE. Oder an das
eben schon erwähnte NECK.
Beides naturbelassene Leder,
beide bekommen mit der Zeit
diese besonders schöne Patina.
HABEN SIE EIGENTLICH EIN
LIEBLINGSLEDER?
Gar nicht so leicht zu beantworten.
Ich den ke aber, für
mich ganz persön lich gibt es
zwei Traumkombinationen:
die Leder qualität NECK auf
dem Modell DS–47 und die
Lederqualität NATURALE auf
dem Modell DS–51.

Although I’ve been with the
company for a good many
years and really do work with
leather every day, my answer
is still a resounding yes.
Leather is a natural material,
so each piece is always different.
For example, I am always
discovering ‹new pictures› in
the patterning of the grain
and pores. It is simply that no
two hides are ever the same
and I find that fascinating.
The same is true of the feel
when I touch it. Handling
premium leather and feeling
its essence is always a very
special experience. I can’t imagine
that this could ever become
simple routine. It’s
much the same thing as with
first-class wines.
WHERE DOES THE LEATH-
ER USED BY DE SEDE
COME FROM? WHAT DO
YOU PAY PARTICULAR AT-
TENTION TO?
We look for hides from large,
healthy animals that have
been well tended their entire
life. Fed properly, cared for
and treated with the respect
they deserve. This means we
don’t have a very big choice;
de Sede can only contemplate
using hides from bulls
reared in Scandinavia, southern
Germany, Switzerland
and Austria. This is the only
standard of quality we can
employ, since these hides
meet the demands of both us
and our customers.
CAN YOU TELL US IN A
FEW WORDS THE HISTO-
RY BEHIND THE LEATHER
THAT IS USED HERE AT
DE SEDE BEFORE IT
COMES TO KLINGNAU
FOR PROCESSING.
First of all, the hides are taken
in refrigerated trucks from the
abattoir to the tannery. For
ecological reasons, they are
not “salted” for transport. At
the tannery, the hides are subjected
to a variety of fairly
complex processes using natural
mineral salts, fine fats, oils
and top-quality dyes to transform
them little by little into
de Sede leather. Finally, I make
a close inspection of each single
hide that has been processed
before it leaves the
tannery. I sign the hides that
meet our stringent criteria
and then they are brought to
the de Sede workshop in
Klingnau, where each hide undergoes
further rigorous inspection
after arrival.
DE SEDE OFFERS A RANGE
OF VERY DIFFERENT
LEATHERS. WHAT ARE THE
MAIN DIFFERENCES BE-
TWEEN THEM?
In a nutshell: the differences
are in the thickness of the
leather, the pattern of its grain
and in the finish. Thicknesses
range from 1.1 millimetres to
half a centimetre. That’s a difference
you can really feel! The
structure of our leather goes
from smooth – in the case of
our NUVO quality – to quite
coarse in structure in our
NECK leather, which really is
half a centimetre thick.
A LOT OF PEOPLE FIND
THAT LEATHER GETS EVEN
MORE ATTRACTIVE AS
IT AGES. WHAT DO YOU
THINK?
In my opinion, all fine natural
materials gain in character
with the passage of time. This
is a very marked difference to
industrially manufactured
disposable products. Truly topquality
leather acquires a genuine
history as the years go by.
You could say that it actually
lives alongside you. I find that
very exciting – and beautiful.
ARE THERE LEATHERS THAT
GROW PARTICU LARLY AT-
TRACTIVE AS THEY AGE?
There is our NATURALE
quality, for instance, which is
soft and velvety; then again,
there’s NECK as I just mentioned.
Both are left in their
natural state and both develop
an extremely lovely patina
over time.

IN spezielles Kurzporträt.
Seit 40 Jahren steht der
Name de Sede nicht nur für
ganz besondere Leder. Sondern
auch für einen ganz besonderen
Umgang mit Leder.
Alles beginnt damit, dass
de Sede 1965 aus einem kleinen,
aber feinen Sattlerbetrieb
hervorgeht. Das ist
unsere Herkunft, unsere DNA.
Gleich nach Gründung gelingt
de Sede erstmals die Verarbeitung
von Leder mit so genannter
Riemchenabheftung.
Ein Novum. Noch im selben
Jahr entsteht die erste Kollektion
aus reinem Anilinleder,
also aus gänzlich naturbelassenem
Leder, das maximal mit
etwas Wachs versehen wird.
Auch dies eine Neuheit. Nur
wenige Jahre später setzt
de Sede mit der Patchwork-
Verarbeitung einen weiteren
wichtigen Trend.
Anschließend wird unser fünf
Millimeter dickes Bullenleder
NECK international gefeiert.
Die Fachwelt ist sich einig:
ein Meilenstein in der Polstermöbelherstellung.
Die Einführung
von Zickzacknähten aus
Chirurgenfäden baut unsere
Vorreiterrolle in der Verarbeitung
von so genannten Dickledern
noch einmal aus.
Dies sind nur einige wenige
Beispiele für unsere ebenso
kontinuierliche wie intensive
Auseinandersetzung mit dem
Naturmaterial Leder. Viele
weitere Innovationen haben
seit 1965 dazu beigetragen,
den Ruf von de Sede als Lederexperte
zu festigen. Dem
fühlen wir uns verpflichtet.
So gilt heute etwa die de Sede
Lederqualität NATURALE als
Optimum. Denn die naturbelassene
Oberfläche und der
weiche Griff machen dieses
Leder nahezu einzigartig.

For 40 years, the
name of de Sede has
stood not only for very special
leather, but also for our very
special relationship to this outstanding
material.
It all began back in 1965 when
de Sede was born from a
small but highly skilled saddler’s
workshop. That is our
origin, our DNA.
Immediately after its inception,
de Sede for the first
time succeeded in joining sections
of leather using a lacing
technique – an eye-catching
innovation. The same year also
saw the first collection using
pure aniline dyeing; with this,
the leather is left in its totally
natural state and treated only
with a little wax at most – another
exciting first.
Just a few years later, de Sede
set a further important trend
with the use of patchwork.
Next, another international
milestone in the manufacture
of upholstered furniture was
established with our NECK
leather – ox hide a full five
millimetres in thickness. The
introduction of zigzag stitching
using surgical thread further
underpinned our trailblazing
role in processing so-called
thick leathers.
These are just a few examples
of our on-going and intensive
involvement with this wonderful
natural material. Since
1965, a wealth of further innovations
have contributed
towards firmly establishing
de Sede’s reputation as an acknowledged
expert in the
realm of leather. And this is a
reputation we are determined
to live up to.
Today, for example, de Sede’s

since its natural surface
texture and soft, supple

Im de Sede Leder Lab prüfen
wir aber zum Beispiel auch
alle Leder, die wir zuvor in
den Ger bereien ausgewählt

so ge nan nte Lichtechtheit. In
einer Xenon- Licht-Testanlage
simulieren wir dazu innerhalb
einer Woche drei bis fünf Jahre
Tageslichteinwirkung. So
können wir ge nau überprüfen,
ob unsere strengen Vorgaben
bezüglich der Ausbleichung
erfüllt werden.

First of all, the answers are
tested on our prototypes.
Then when deemed appropriate,
they are incorporated
into the de Sede collection
itself. Both into our new
models and into our classics.
Anything that can be improved
is improved.
In the Leather Lab, we also
examine all the leathers that
we have selected from the
tanneries one more time to
ensure that they are resistant
to light, for example. Using
xenon test equipment, we can
simulate in just one week the
effects of daylight over a period
of three to five years. In
this way, we are able to check
accurately whether our strict
requirements in respect of
fading are met in full.

de Sede’s range of leathers
need to have different properties
because the demands
made on coverings are so
very different.
Some people might want their
leather to be left as natural as
possible, like de Sede’s especially
attractive NATURALE
quality, which retains all its
original features. They don’t
merely accept the fact that
leather of this kind takes on
certain markings with time,
they actually want this.

LIVING, 1,5 bis 1,7 mm stark,

years since it is not sensitive
to moisture, staining or the

NATÜRLICH SCHÖN,

SELECT ist die Wahl derer,
