Bishop's House, July 23d, 1851.
Father Petcherine has communicated with me, as he states, on
;your part, respecting a young man of the name of De La Rue ( 146 ).
This young man is French by birth, his elder brother, through whose
application he was received, being also a student of the College [ of
Oscott] and in subdeacons orders (147). De La Rue is an ecclesiastical
student, educating and being supported at the cost of the Church
students fund at the rate of f.. 45 a year.
It appears by a letter from him, dated Clapham and written
from your convent, addressed to his brother, that he took the opportunity
of Fr. Petcherine's being at the college to give a retreat to the
missionary clergy, without any knowledge of superiors, to have an
interview with Fr. Petcherine and, as he says, by him was counselled
to make a retreat at Clapham.
The young man ~urther states that he asked leave of the superior
to go to London to see the Exhibition « as a pretext » for
going to your convent. He further states that in a few minutes he
should leave the convent for the Ostend Packet and intimates that
he is going to your novitiate in Belgium. I have conversed with Fr.
Petcherine on these facts, who so far from denying them vindicates
the course taken. ·
The ground that he vindicates upon is the right to equivocate
(148). Another isthat young foreigners are in danger out of religious
houses. The Rev. Mr. Tath [ ?] was present and can witness
to these facts. I have had no hesitation in the course of our conversation
in signifying to Fr. Petcherine that I consider it a breach of
