Ein kürzlich im Verlag G. Braun
erschienenes Buch mit dem Titel
„Stuttgart. Architektur des 20. und
21. Jahrhunderts“ erinnert daran,
welch herausragende moderne und
zeitgenössische Architektur die
Hauptstadt des deutschen
Bundeslands Baden-Württemberg
zu bieten hat. Mit den beiden
Autorinnen besuchen wir nicht nur
jene Gebäude, die Architekturgeschichte
geschrieben haben – wie die
legendäre Weißenhofsiedlung aus
dem Jahr 1927, an der Architekten
wie Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier
und Gropius mitgearbeitet haben,
oder das Porsche Museum, das 2009
von dem österreichischen
Architekturbüro Delugan Meissl
errichtet wurde –, sondern auch
viele andere bemerkenswerte
Arbeiten.

A book published recently by Verlag G.
Braun entitled “Stuttgart. Architecture
of the 20th and 21st Centuries” is a
reminder of the quite outstanding
modern and contemporary architecture
the capital of the German province of
Baden-Württemberg has to offer. The
book’s two authors transport the reader
not just to the buildings that have
written architectural history – such as
the legendary Weissenhof Estate, from
1927, worked on by such luminaries as
Mies van der Rohe, Corbusier and
Gropius – but also to spaces like the
Porsche Museum, built by Austrian
architectural office Delugan Meissl in
2009, in addition to a wide range of
other notable works.

Es macht schon Sinn, wenn sich Varna um
den Titel „Europäische Kulturhauptstadt
2019“ bemüht. Auch wenn die bulgarische
Küstenstadt vor allem wegen der außergewöhnlich
schönen Strände, des goldgelben
Sandes und der Ufern des Schwarzen Meeres
bekannt ist: die Stadt hat auch in Sachen
Kultur so manches zu bieten. So gibt es
Ausgrabungen aus römischer und aus
byzantinischer Zeit, ein ausgezeichnetes
Archäologisches Museum, in dem der älteste
Goldschatz der Welt aufbewahrt wird, und die
eindrucksvolle Muttergottes-Kathedrale mit
schönen Wandmalereien und Holzarbeiten.

A stroll through Varna

It makes sense for Varna to be competing for the
title of European Capital of Culture 2019. Even if
the Bulgarian coastal town is best-known for its
unusually lovely beaches, golden sand and location
on the shores of the Black Sea, it also has a vast
amount to offer when it comes to matters cultural:
Varna is home to excavations from the Roman and
Byzantine eras, an excellent Archaeological Museum
(where the world’s oldest golden treasure is stored),
and the impressive Dormition of the Mother of God
Cathedral, with its stunning wall paintings and
woodwork.
