Kurs 5: Fremdsprachen: Englisch
THEMA: A KALEIDOSCOPE OF FILMS AND
LITERATURE IN THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING
WORLD
Kursleitung: Dr. Sonja Bahn-Coblans, Mag. Karin Baumgartner
Literature and film have a lot in common but also a lot that is different. Both
media tell stories; both have plots, themes, settings, characters and structures;
both arouse emotions in the reader/viewer. However, the means used are
different. Reading affects the reader through the words read; film manipulates the
viewer in a group experience.
In this course we would like to take a look at texts and their corresponding films
from different parts and different groups of the English-speaking world: traditional
and immigrant Britain; white, Native American and African American United States;
the Caribbean; Australia; New Zealand; South Africa; India.
We will only have time to work on certain sections of a novel, play or short story and
compare them with clips from the equivalent film(s). What happens to a text when
it is made into a film? Why do some texts get written after the story has
been filmed? How does each medium create the atmosphere and
mood? What devices are used to what effect?
The issues that will arise are the differences between the two
media, the strengths and weaknesses of each and the advantages
and disadvantages of adaptation as a whole.
The cultural background of the
original and that of the film will
also be points for discussion, as
well as how the setting or tone
are created, how the characters
are imagined or visualised, how
the message is put across, what
we learn and what picture is
given of the culture involved.
Zielgruppe: Jugendliche, die die
englische Sprache lieben und
interessiert sind an einer kulturellen
Vielfalt, die sich in
Literatur und Film auf ihre
jeweils spezielle Weise widerspiegelt.
