Comics aus Berlin. Bilder einer Stadt
Haus der Berliner Festspiele, 3.–15. September 2013
Ausstellungskonzept
Comics in Berlin« gezeigt.
unmittelbar an.
So stehen Sharmila
Banerjee, Aisha Franz, Martin Ernstsen und Till Thomas stell-
7
»Tito On Ice« dienten.
Comics from Berlin. Images of a City
Haus der Berliner Festspiele, September 3–15, 2013
Exhibition concept
It is always a particular challenge for curators and museums to show
comics in an exhibition: How should one convey the originality and
manifoldness of a medium that most visitors know as a comic or
magazine strip in print? What is the best way to present the contents
and subjects of comics? What pages of a longer plot should be best
chosen to stand exemplarily for the whole story and what is the best
ratio between visibility and legibility on a comic page?
All these are questions that every comic exhibition must answer
over and over again. Comics are not only an independent but also
a resistant art form that evades the more or less strict basic concepts
of the classical museum and demands individual solutions.
Most exhibitions have a tendency to emphasise the graphic – or to
put it in a more comprehensive manner – the aesthetic dimension
of comics. During this process, the comic becomes an artefact with
every single sheet being illuminated, framed, and put into an artistic
setting. This strategy can be criticized, but despite its problematic
nature there is a crucial advantage: it opens the eyes of the visitor
to the artistic complexity and stylistic range of comics. The question
concerning the real original has not just become volatile in the
digital age, but has a long tradition with regard to the comic as a
medium of reproduction.
So this exhibition is a plea to look at the beginnings of the comic,
to draw attention to the artistic facets and techniques of its origins.
That is why the visitor will find a great number of sketches, preliminary
drawings, and even paintings that do not necessarily represent
the finished printed product, but are nevertheless essential in
the process of making comics. Even though comics are increasingly
being coloured and reproduced digitally, and are sometimes made
completely on a computer, the paper drawing still dominates in the
beginning and remains the first and most important step in design
as a manual craft.
This knowledge is not new but it needs particular emphasis, especially
for visitors who are not that familiar with the medium of comics.
No exhibition can replace actually reading comics, but it can
encourage people to read them. If we manage this feat, then the
exhibition has fulfilled its most important task: to carry the comics
into the hearts of a literarily and artistically demanding audience.
But the exhibition even offers those who have long since been welldisposed
towards comics a wide range of visual impressions and
fascinating details. As the title of the exhibition suggests, we have
chosen comic-strip artists who live and work here in Berlin. There is
hardly any other city in Germany that has such a colourful and lively
scene of comic-strip artists. Though it would be overconfident to call
10
Berlin the German capital of comics, the number of comic illustrators
working here is immense. Therefore this exhibition we have put
together can only convey a fractional part of what has been happening
in the comic world in Berlin in the 25 years since the Berlin wall
came down.
Those who study the exhibits in more detail will soon find out
that Berlin’s recent and very recent past plays an important role in
the comics on display. German reunification marks a chronological
point from which the local comic scene started to come together
and find a new orientation. In 1990, Volker Handloik published in
the Berlin edition of LIANE his volume “Leichtmetall. Comics in der
DDR” containing a selection of 42 artists, and in the spring of 1994
the exhibition “Bei Walter. Comics in Berlin” was shown at the Academy
of the Arts. We would like to join these and similar projects and
also bring in new accents. With 22 artists, we are presenting two generations
of comic-strip illustrators who have been shaping the artistic
image of this city since the late 1980s.
The works of Tim Dinter are positioned at the beginning of our
walk through the foyer of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The white
wall on this floor has been painted especially by him and shows the
signet of the exhibition with the title “Comics aus Berlin. Bilder einer
Stadt” (tr. Comics from Berlin. Images of a City). A possible allusion
to the legendary experimental documentary film “Berlin. Die Sinfonie
der Großstadt” (tr. Berlin. Symphony of a Metroplis) from 1927
by Walter Ruttmann or its new version by Thomas Schadt is fully
intended. Many of the works we have selected deal in one way or
another with Berlin, taking a critical look or using the city as a motif
or even taking a nostalgic look. It is not only Berlin itself and its history,
but also the artistic visions connected with this city that are
the focus of consideration. The comics of Flix, Susanne Buddenberg
and Thomas Henseler follow this concept with their historical contents.
The same applies for the works of Paula Bulling, Fil, Ulli Lust,
Mawil or Reinhard Kleist, despite the fact that they are very different
in their styles. With some exceptions the subject of “Berlin as a city”
runs as a clear thread though the entire exhibition.
Another work of art individually designed for this exhibition and
with a clear reference to Berlin is the redesign of the Bornemann
Bar by the Renate comic group. Founded in 1989, their shop at
Tucholsky straße 32 is an exclusive local branch under the auspices of
Peter Auge Lorenz and the meeting place, contact point and library
for the city’s comic fans.
The rear part of the exhibition area has been dedicated to the
young and international comic scene of Berlin. Sharmila Banerjee,
Aisha Franz, Martin Ernstsen, and Till Thomas represent the quite
extensive publishing collective of “Treasure Fleet” which serves as a
distribution channel for their own mini-comics. Swedish comic artist
Max Andersson and Chrigel Farner from Switzerland are another two
artists in our programme who have been living in the city for many
years and who, at the same time, do much more than just illustrate
comics. In this connection we are very happy that we could use the
11
mobile home of Japanese artist Kyohei Sakaguchi in the foyer as a
space to exhibit the objects of Max Andersson. These were used for
the animated film “Tito On Ice” he has just shot with Helena Ahonen.
Together with the works of ATAK, Henning Wagenbreth, Anke
Feuchtenberger, Dominique Goblet, and Kai Pfeiffer they once again
confirm what was said at the beginning, something that applies for
the whole exhibition: the comic is an independent and resistant art
form which cannot be reduced to the format of its reproduction only.
We consciously chose works of art and artists who do not work exclusively
in the field of comics. It is our firm belief that the comic develops
its own personality in the strongest way possible when there is
a creative exchange and a contrast to animation, illustration or cartoon.
Comics in
Comics in Berlin » a été montrée à l’Akademie der Künste.
Branche in Berlin gehört.
In Ulli Lusts
Zeitungsstrips »Der Flaneur« an.
So präsentiert
So wäre
Comics from Berlin. Images of a City
An Essay by Jens Meinrenken
Anyone who has read a cartoon by OL or an episode of “Didi & Stulle”
by Fil, will notice immediately that comics from Berlin have their
very own language. The characters rant away in dialect, the artists
play around with a great deal of local features and the contemporary
goings-on in the city are sharply poked fun at. It is this directness
and gruffness of Berlin comics that already fascinated me early on.
And even if, as someone from outside the city, I don’t understand
every joke and every innuendo immediately, the sheer honesty in
Berlin’s comics has always bowled me over.
A comic that is exemplary of this, is “ATAK vs. Ahne”, which was
first released in November 2002 by the still young avant publishers.
The cover of the landscape format ring binder shows a violent
boxing match at the climax of its deciding moment. The fighter on
the left is just about to knock out his opponent with a cut to the
chin with his over-long arm. This is a duel between artists of a special
kind, a fight between image and text, which can be seen so many
times in the comic. Inside the book, this explosive dialectic appears
to continue. A newspaper notice from March 2000 is referred to; in
it a man in the Berlin district of Wedding, in a street I once lived in
myself, is threatening to manoeuvre his girlfriend out of their living
room with an antitank missile and it was taking place. And yet, a
finely sensitive poetry can be found even in this brutal picture, a sensitivity
that is another characteristic side of Berlin comics, which is
not only symptomatic of the early works of ATAK or Anke Feuchtenberger.
1992 saw the setting up of Jochen Enterprises in Berlin, a publisher
whose services to the city’s comic scene cannot be overstated.
In addition to the first German-language publications of American
independent comics by Chester Brown or Peter Bagge, works by Anke
Feuchtenberger, Max Andersson, ATAK or Reinhard Kleist and others
were published there. After Jochen Enterprises closed in 2000,
its programme was in part taken over by Reprodukt, a comic publisher
which, next to avant, has now become one of the best-known
and most influential in the industry in Berlin.
In its initial phase after its foundation in 1991, Reprodukt also
concentrated on American comics, but then began to integrate local
illustrators gradually into its portfolio. All three of the aforementioned
publishers are therefore representative of a development
that has made German and Berlin comics known internationally.
For example, if you look at the publications by foreign publishers,
you will soon notice that the situation has made a 180-degree turnaround.
Comics from Berlin illustrators like Ulli Lust, Paula Bulling or
Mawil are not only available in different languages on the European
market, but some of them have also been released by publishers in
the USA. Once again, the city of Berlin is presenting itself here as a
24
centre for art, fashion and literature with an image that has spread
worldwide.
With individual pages and illustrations from ATAK’s “Hunde über
Berlin” (tr. Dogs over Berlin) and “Linie 63” (tr. Line 63) from Anke
Feuchtenberger, the exhibition shows a picture of the city that has
been gone for a long time, if it even did ever exist in this form. Personal
memories, fantastic insets and fictional elements create a Berlin,
the idiosyncratic panorama of which only unfolds once it has
reached the inner eye of the reader. This is especially true of the
comic parable “Berlinoir” by Reinhard Kleist and Tobias O. Meißner.
A vampire story in strong picaresque colours, somnambulant and
threatening in equal measure. Impossible to overlook here are the
citations from the Weimar cinema of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau or
Fritz Lang. As such, the tower from the silent film “Metropolis” (1927)
glares like an infernal building in the background of the panel and
is also reminiscent of the illustrative visions to be found in the film
sets designed back then by Erich Kettelhut.
The new and the old Berlin, the real and the fictional city, are
the two complementary poles of the exhibition. In Ulli Lust’s comic
adaptation “Flughunde” (2013; tr. Flying Foxes), based on the novel of
the same title by Marcel Beyer, it is the dark Berlin under the Nazis
that spreads its musty smell in the rooms of the former Reich Chancellery
and across the city’s roofs. Another very dark side of Berlin
is also shown by Paula Bulling, whose most recent work deals with
the Occupy movement in Berlin. The sleepy metropolis on the illustrated
pages of “Nachtwinkel” (tr. Night Angle) cannot cover up,
despite the calm they exude, that living and working spaces in the
city centre are becoming increasingly difficult to get a hold of, especially
for artists. Together with immigrants and refugees, the real
problems of Berlin’s poorer inhabitants are given their very own personal
interpretation in this comic.
Reality, as well as the history and architecture of Berlin are often
central themes. Again and again, we see individual locations, places
and circumstances as the focus of the works on exhibition. In the
pages of Peter Auge Lorenz’ most recently released comic “Das Land,
das es nicht gibt” (tr. The Land that Doesn’t Exist), for example, one
can see the Gendarmenmarkt with its neo-classical buildings which
is described by the illustrator as “the most beautiful playground in
the world”. Here, one gains a sense of a past that most people from
the West are hardly familiar with. Far more dramatic and also far
more dangerous is the story of the Holzapfel family, which is told
by Susanne Buddenberg and Thomas Henseler in “BERLIN – Geteilte
Stadt” (2012; tr. BERLIN – A City Divided). Their spectacular escape to
the West with the help of a self-made cable car gained a great deal of
attention back then in the local press, as the two illustrators document
using a reproduction of a Berlin newspaper article. However,
it is when one sees it edited using film-like techniques and its sudden
manifestation in pictures, that this flight can once again comes
to life visually and has an effect that goes far beyond the actual story
itself.
25
The ability of comics to trigger a feeling of empathy in the person
looking at them and allowing past events to come back to life again
is something the medium shares with the cinema or painting. And
yet the comic has developed its very own visual language that distinguishes
it from other art forms. This is true in particular for the
means of illustrative reduction, the delimiting nature of the panels
and the sequential nature of the images, which make comics ideal
commentators of their environment that capture and express what
is to be conveyed with only a few strokes. The Berlin comic gets to
grips with its city and takes a good look at it, sometimes with laconic
aplomb, at other times with earnest wit. Despite the necessary interpretation
and fiction, the comics of Mawil, Tim Dinter, Fil or Flix
often contain a chronicle-like feature, a small detail of Berlin, which
only becomes apparent if you look or read more closely. As such, in
Flix’ modern version of “Don Quijote” (2012), the title character travels
down the boulevard “Spanische Allee” into the centre of the city
almost certainly surprising a few readers who are very familiar with
the city's streets.
These thematic approaches of Berlin comic artists to their home
town are marked by great stylistic and social diversity. The works
demonstrate just as often a love of irony as they do serious criticism.
For example, when OL pokes fun at the Berlin gallery or film
scene, then it has just as much humorous brisance as his story of
the neighbourhood boy Mirko, who destroys the Fernsehturm Berlin
with his hand dressed as a giant gorilla – not to mention the political
side shot at the fear of terrorist attacks triggered by 11 September.
A far more leisurely pace is taken by Tim Dinter in the newspaper
strip “Der Flaneur” (tr. The Stroller), which he created together
with Kai Pfeiffer. Here we have the smug, alienated view towards
the old Berlin bourgeoisie: lusty ladies and respectable gentlemen
whose city consists of well-tended streets, buildings and undisclosed
secrets.
However, it doesn’t always have to be Berlin in the numerous pictures
on exhibition. In Henning Wagenbreth, Max Andersson and
Chrigel Farner we have three artistic positions whose aesthetic differences
could hardly be more different. While Henning Wagenbreth
cultivates his own graphic style as a professor at the University
of the Arts in Berlin, Chrigel Farner has developed a style reminiscent
of the Old Masters which is seldom found in comics. In
between these two, you have the post-Apocalyptic world of illustration
by Max Andersson, whose black spectrum ranges from comic to
animation. A peculiar series that is populated by monstrous humanmachine
figures, strange technical objects and other-worldly landscapes.
No matter whether toy or pixel aesthetic (Wagenbreth), fine
painting suggestive of surrealist hallucinogens (Farner) or objects
smelling literally like lubricant and petrol (Andersson), all three artists
are possessed by a playful instinct to take the grotesque, the carnivalesque
and parody to extremes. As such, Chrigel Farner not only
presents us with a previously unknown comic version of the old fairytale
of Tom Thumb, but also creates, with his drawings of towers
26
made out of human bodies stacked one on top of the other, a fragile
architecture with diverse references to the history of art. Surprising,
and at the same time highly contemporary, are the future visions
from Henning Wagenbreth’s book “Plastic Dog” (2013), which originally
appeared in 2004 in the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” and as an
electronic comic strip. The city and the natural realm come across
here as a world controlled by computers and the military, where
there is hardly any room for personal development. War, terrorist
resistance and domination by robots are only a few of the potential
plagues that spread throughout this comic.
The historical, social or political themes of so-called graphic
novels deserve to be taken seriously, but their aesthetic dimension
should, too. As we already mentioned in the introductory text dealing
with the concept of the exhibition, the comic is an independent
and resistant form of art. This certainly applies to Berlin comics
and their history. While the exhibits displayed as examples in
the catalogue cannot be seen as a complete show of the exhibition
as a whole, nevertheless, they are representative of the spread of the
comic in the last decades at artistic level and in terms of content. It
is therefore urgently recommended that the illustration techniques
of contemporary art be compared with those of the contemporary
comic. Not in order to underpin the influence of the comic on modern
art, which has already been done in various exhibitions, but to
arrive at a shared understanding of the means of expression and
design used. There is a dormant knowledge here that this exhibition
can only exploit to a certain extent. That is why I see the evolution of
the Berlin comic not so much as a result of historical circumstances
such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and Germany’s reunification, but
more as the result of creative encounters and artistic decisions. The
young and upcoming generation of illustrators in particular, represented
at the exhibition, by, among others, Aisha Franz, Sharmila
Banerjee, Till Thomas and Martin Ernstsen, prove that the future of
the comic relies increasingly on international cooperation and recognition.
We can only hope that Berlin manages to maintain some of
its reserves for young artists of all media and does not sink into the
swamp of large cities where luxury rules, like Paris, London or Moscow.
It is no longer a certain technique, a single individual stroke that
defines the style of young comic illustrators, but experimentation
and the mixture of different forms of expression. This requires a
vibrant art scene that is in a process of constant renewal, both in the
area of comics and in the other arts. It would appear that the longterm
cooperation with the publishers and institutions based in Berlin
is just as important in this respect. Comics need a fixed place in
cultural and social awareness; they rely on public support and recognition.
Every visitor to the exhibition will soon grasp that there is no
special form defining the way comics have to look and present themselves.
And so we will be showing the joint work of Dominique Goblet
from Belgium and Kai Pfeiffer from Berlin, which was released as
an independent comic in the spring of 2014. The large-format prints
radiate power and illustrative energy, expressed clearly in the pri-
27
mary colours used. At the same time, you will also find smaller formats
at our exhibition; fine sketches drawn using pencil or quill,
which convey a completely different, unimposing and miniaturelike
image of comics
One can and may congratulate the Berlin comic for its impudence,
originality and wit. And the city of Berlin for its vital and
influential comic scene. It is evidence of a Germany-wide phenomena,
in which more and more women are becoming interested in
illustrating comics. Thanks to the constant commitment of professors
like Anke Feuchtenberger, ATAK, Henrik Dorgathen, Martin tom
Dieck or Henning Wagenbreth, an enthusiasm and skill for comics
has developed at the German art schools, which support and promote
the medium in a sustainable manner. With this in mind, this
exhibition aims to make a small contribution towards continuing
people's interest in comics, whether artistically or academically. In
addition to the established artists, it is the numerous comic illustrators
of Berlin who lend the city its unique charm and its creative
energy. This is something that accompanies the history of the comic
in Berlin far beyond the boundaries of the exhibition and defines its
real vision.
sont au moins aussi surprenantes, ainsi que très actuelles ;
In seinen
Born in East Berlin in 1976, Mawil self-published comics already
when still a schoolboy. His graphic memoir “Wir können ja Freunde
bleiben”, his thesis for the Academy of Art Berlin in 2003, has been
translated into six languages. His protagonist Supa-Hasi is not only
the alter ego of the illustrator, but has become a kind of trademark,
too. Mawil’s comics often tell very personal stories, elaborated in a
charming and funny way.
