In 2013, Bach – Reflections in Jazz will be focusing mainly on keyboard
artists. Norwegian pianist Ketil Bjørnstad is renowned as much for his
bewitchingly romantic piano performances as for his skills as a novelist.
In his solo concerts, he succeeds in narrating poetry­filled stories in
music as well as miraculously interweaving classical influences and
contemporary jazz. The Marcin Wasilewski Trio, which partly made its
name through its collaboration with groups led by Polish trumpeter
Tomasz Stanko, cultivates the interaction of piano, double bass and
drums and in doing so has developed into one of the most original
piano trios on the contemporary jazz scene. The virtuoso Finnish
pianist Iiro Rantala has already received enthusiastic reviews for his
performances with Trio Töykeät. This energetic keyboard artist crosses
musical styles and genres with verve and ease. In Leipzig, he will be
appearing in a consummate formation made up of the new Polish star
violinist Adam Bałdych and cellist Asja Valcic, who made her name
with the radio.string.quartet.vienna.
The African Reflections concert features Ba Cissoko Kora Connection.
Guinean­born kora player and singer Ba Cissoko is a star of African
music. Together with his quartet, a formation made up of two West
African double harps, guitar and percussion, he plays a blend of traditional
Mandingo griot music and western influences.
