Bachs Motetten blieben auch nach 1750 im beständigen repertoire
des thomanerchores und erklangen als »Paradestücke« nicht selten
bei repräsentativen anlässen. Zu den prominentesten Zeitzeugen
solcher aufführungen gehört Mozart. im april 1789 hörte er die Motette
»singet dem Herrn ein neues lied«. Die Darbietung wurde für ihn
zum schlüsselerlebnis. Begeistert vom leistungsniveau der thomaner
soll er ausgerufen haben: »so ein chor haben wir in Wien, und hat man
in Berlin und Prag nicht«. Zu jener Zeit fungierte die schola thomana
de facto als ein Musikkonservatorium. auf jene traditionsreiche
Bildungsstätte konnte sich Mendelssohn berufen, als er 1843 in
leipzig die erste deutsche Musikhochschule gründete. Hier lehrten
viele namhafte Persönlichkeiten, darunter von 1907 bis 1916 Max
reger, der zeitweise auch als Universitätsmusikdirektor amtierte.
seinen 100. Psalm »Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle Welt« komponierte reger
zum 350. gründungsjubiläum der Universität Jena. vor der Uraufführung
prognostizierte er dem befreundeten thomasorganisten und
rat geber Karl straube: »es muß kolossal klingen«.
Bach’s motets remained a staple feature of the repertoire of
st. thomas’ choir even after 1750 and were quite often performed as
»show pieces« on prestigious occasions. one of the most prominent
contemporary witnesses of this kind of performance was Mozart. in
april 1789, he heard the motet »sing to the lord a new song«. For him,
the performance was a key experience. enthused by the standard of
the st. thomas’ choristers, he is said to have exclaimed: »We have no
choir as this in vienna, and they have none in Berlin and Prague either«.
at that time, the schola thomana was a de facto conservatory of music.
it was on this tradition-steeped institution that Mendelssohn modelled
the first german academy of music, which he founded in leipzig
in 1843. Many famous people taught here, including Max reger from
1907 to 1916 who was also the university’s musical director for a time.
reger composed his setting of Psalm 100, »Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle
Welt« (»Make a joyful noise unto the lord«), for the 350th anniversary
of the founding of Jena University. Before the premiere, he expressed
to his friend and advisor, the st. thomas’ organist Karl straube, his
anticipation that: »it must sound grandiose!«
