Raumsonde Alpenblick – Unknown worlds in-between
understandable processes. A less tangible exhibition project.
Achim Sauter
Raumsonde Alpenblick – The title of the exhibition
project taking place at Platform3 between
July 16 and September 12 2009 seems curious.
A spacecraft in the Alps? The unusual combination
suggests it is trying to link things
through non-existent connections. Raumsonde
Alpenblick, “on a mission” in Munich-Obersendling,
aims to initiate and demonstrate
art mediation, artistic processes and cultural
practice alongside established education or
art institutions, opening wider possibilities
of cultural participation and individual access
to art.
It is not the intention to present a completed
exhibition, but to comprehend the
process, to work site-specific and to leave the
consumption of art behind. So the exhibition
space is in constant modification.
During the project time there are varied
temporary artistic projects taking place, for
example concerts, workshops, artistic productions,
children programs, art events and film
screenings. There is no hierarchical structure
nominating one topic to the main or supporting
program. It is all about artistic work proceeding
experimentally. Therefore Raumsonde
Alpenblick is to be understood as a model
for open organization, non-consumable exhibition
formats and collective work. The exhibition
space is experienced as a lab, factory or
domicile.
ZEHNkampf |Wand zu Wand|
Jan T. Wilms
ZEHNkampf |Wand zu Wand| presented the
works of ten young artists from the Munich
Academy of Fine Arts. From September 16 –
September 19 2009 new sculptural works,
room installations, video works, photography
and performances were on display in the central
exhibition space of Platform3. The exhibition
asked thematic questions about the significance
of contemporary aesthetic consideration
regarding conceptual site-specific strategies
in a young generation of artists. Through sculpture
as well as performance, the artists transformed
existing structures into other forms
that were continuously refined in order to conceptually
and perceptually give the organization
of the room/space a new structure.
Besides spatial factors and physical parameters,
such as temperature, the ability
to absorb and reflect, haptic effects of the surfaces,
colour, pattern, corrosion etc., the measurable
space is perceived and interpreted
in many different ways by the human factor.
Mediated through a broad range of artistic
approaches, “space” was approached as “motion”
in its physical relevance, as well as as
“emotion” in its psychological effect. “…the
idea that a work has been created for a particular
place whose conditions determine the
way to conceive and produce the skulpture
which, in turn, redefines the site itself.”
(E.J. Izquierdo, “Specific Sites”, in: Barcelona,
Exhibition.cat., Barcelona 1996, p. 69).
Thus, the sculptural aspect of site-specificity
closely relates to the extensive dimensions
of a plastic object just as an installation
piece relates to its environment. Dimensions,
size and position of a site-specific artwork are
determined by the topography of its location.
Furthermore, the temporary exhibition context
adds the factor of fugacity to the artworks.
The works have been created for a particular
location and space. Therefore, they can function
effectively only there.
