4.6 Conclusion
Most injuries and fatal accidents in all three age
categories occur in the «Falls» accident segment.
Therefore, fall prevention activities must be allotted
a central role in the home and leisure accident
sector.
In six of the seven accident segments for children
and adolescents are the most important risk
group. The bfu therefore recommends that prevention
work for this age class should not be limited to
focusing on «Falls» accident segment but rather to
address the occurrence of accidents on the whole.
This will permit opportunities for multipliers and/or
multiplicative settings to be considered synergistically.
Consideration should also be given to examining
the extent to which these possibilities can also
be used between the different accident areas and
the individual accident segments.
«not living independently» is meaningful. With
regard to the prevention strategy, a «settingspecific
shift» can be seen. Responsibility for prevention
(in the sense of active versus passive participation
on the part of the senior citizen concerned)
is shifting from a more active participation
within the setting «living independently» to a more
passive participation within the setting, «not living
independently». This also corresponds to a shift
from more behaviour-oriented prevention opportunities
to relationship-oriented ones.
In addition to prevention in the focal points «Falls»
and «Children and adolescents», the general aim is
to keep the relatively low extent of accidents in the
other accident and age segments at least low and
to reduce them at best. This requires a steady continuation
of prevention work at the current high
level.
To work out risk factors for the adults and to
describe possibilities for prevention, a fairly large
amount of data and information is available from
the occupational accident sector. Consideration
should therefore be given to examining whether
there are any synergetic interactions between the
occupational and non-occupational accident areas
and to take these into account in terms of joint
prevention work.
In terms of prevention activities for senior citizens,
who pose a main risk group in the «Falls»
accident segment, the differentiation according to
the setting plays an important role. A distinction
between senior citizens «living independently» and
