4.2 Methods used
The methodological approach used to compile the
bfu’s safety dossier «Home and Leisure» is oriented
towards the bfu’s prevention cycle, which consists
of five successive components (accident research,
prevention goals, preventive programmes,
implementation of measures, success control
(Figure 2). This report focuses on the initial component
– accident research.
Accident research in the sense of a comprehensive,
scientific situational analysis can be regarded as
a basic requirement for an evidence-based approach.
It shows not only what action is required, but
also which prevention approaches are promising.
The situational analysis specifically includes a) an
accident analysis, which includes the evaluation of
epidemiological data, b) a risk analysis, which reveals
the central causes, and c) an intervention
analysis, which describes the potential options for
intervention or prevention. These three analytical
steps aim to ensure that the conclusions and recommendations
formulated have a scientifically
sound basis.
The statistics of the collection point for the statistics
of the UVG accident insurance (SSUV) and
the cause of death statistics (ECOD) of the Federal
Statistical Office (FSO) were used as the basic data
for accident analysis. In order to encompass the full
extent of non-occupational accidents in Switzerland,
the bfu also carries out annual projections.
The literature analysis conducted as part of the
report took a structured approach. Various literature
databases (e.g. PubMed, SafetyLit) were used.
Searching through the literature databases was
limited to English and German products and focused
on the period from 1990 to 2010. Editorials as
they are called were not subject to this search criterion.

Two approaches for the assessment of the risk
factors and prevention possibilities had to be selected
due to the different knowledge and information
bases. An assessment of the risk factors and
prevention opportunities could only be carried out
for the «falls» accident segment and here for the
risk groups children and adolescents as well as
senior citizens. No evaluation was made in the
actual meaning, but an estimate for the other six
accident segments (Figure 1) and for falls sustained
by adults.
