4. Home and leisure
4.1 Introduction
For this purpose, the common causes of accidents
are identified on the basis of epidemiological analyses
of the Swiss accident situation.
Despite intensive prevention efforts, the number of
leisure accidents in Switzerland has been steadily
increasing for years. Approximately 1 million people
are injured each year in a non-occupational
accident – 100 000 on the road, 300 000 when
doing sport and 600 000 in the home or in pursuit
of a hobby. These figures illustrate the importance
of accident prevention in the home and leisure
sector.
Using analytical processes, risk-factor profiles are
compiled for the individual accident segments
(Figure 1) and, based on these, preventive options
are put together and evaluated.
This means that approx. 60% of non-occupational
accidents sustained by the Swiss population occur
in the home and leisure sector, 30% in the sports
sector and 10% in the road traffic sector. As many
as three quarters of fatal accidents occur in the
home and leisure sector.
The home and leisure sector is less dominant where
the burden on the economy is concerned. Of the
total amount of CHF 11 280m in terms of the material
cost of non-occupational accidents, the road
traffic sector accounted for a share of 45%, the
home and leisure sector for 39% and the sports
sector for 16% in 2007. If the total burden on the
economy is taken into account, more than half
(53%) of the total cost calculated amounting to
CHF 53 786m was attributable to the home and
leisure sector.
The aim of this report is to provide the bfu as well
as other Swiss institutions, organisations and interest
groups with the basis for the strategic planning
and implementation of preventive measures
and/or preventive programmes in the home and
leisure sector.
