Development
Access to the Hungarian market took
place with the partial acquisition of the
General firm in Tatabanya. Around 200
existing locations were redesigned from
1991 on along the lines of the SPAR
supermarket concept. Following the
purchase of seven large-scale supermarkets
in Budapest and the acquisition
of a supermarket chain in the south of
Hungary, a modern distribution center
was built in Bicske.
> Meat Factory
Bicske
In 2005, a company-own
meat and sausage producing
company was begun in Hungary
modeled along the lines of the
SPAR’s TANN meat and
sausage production in Austria.
3,500 tons of meat are
processed annually and about
60 different meat and sausage
products manufactured for its
own branch network.

The acquisition of other firms followed,
by which mostly Budapest, the capital
city, and the region around Szeged were
developed. Important steps toward
expansion were able to be taken in 2002
and 2003 with the acquisition of 14 Billa
and 22 Kaiser´s supermarkets.
As a driving force for success, SPAR
Hungary relies on a successful expansion
of its own utilizing the SPAR and
INTERSPAR model store concepts. In
recent years, a wave of expansion as
never before has taken place. A largescale
modernizing operation was implemented
as well.

The seat of the headquarters is in Bicske.

this location. Besides this, another distribution
center in Üllo is to be finished
by the end of 2008. This center will claim
around 51,000 m 2 utility space in its first
building phase.
Cooperation
Budapest
A purchasing cooperation exists with
Metro from the offset in the context of
the so-called "METSPA". Merchandising
ventures are interlinked, co-negotiated
and partnerships agreed upon with
suppliers.
Market Position
SPAR Hungary has undergone an
unusually dynamic development since
its establishment and is already placed
as the fourth in the country’s market
share. In the year 2004, SPAR Hungary
received the "Golden Taler" - a prize
which is bestowed annually upon the
best commercial enterprise in the
country.
