Development
SPAR Slovenia was founded in 1991,
originally in a joint venture with the
Slovenian commercial enterprise,
Mercator. The development of SPAR
and INTERSPAR locations was quickly
begun. Already in 1991, still during
the war in the new Slovenian republic,
the first SPAR supermarket
opened in Ljubljana. The first INTER-
SPAR hypermarket followed in 1993.
Organizational
Structure
In 2003, a company-own, modern
distribution center in Ljubljana was
opened. The headquarters of the
company are also found at this location
today.
Market Position
With about 20 percent of the market
share, SPAR Slovenia is the strong
runner-up in the land and is thus
considered one of Slovenia’s largest
employers. SPAR Slovenia created
more than 500 new, modern jobs in
2006 alone.

In 2007, an in-company production
bakery - the largest in Slovenia - was
opened. With an annual capacity of
7,000 tons of bread, SPAR is thus able
to provide for the Slovenian SPAR
customers in an ideal way.
The Euro was introduced in Slovenia
in 2007, providing the country with an
additional positive impulse.
