Following is some basic information about the most common connections in phone communication.
TAE Verbinder / TAE connector
TAE is the short form for Telecommunications Connection Unit and stands for Germanys most common
connection standard for analogue telephones and additional devices. Basically, there are two kinds of
TAE connectors.
The TAE-F connector is used for telephones, the F stands for the German word of „phone usage“. The N
connector is used for answering machines, modems, telefax machines and other kinds of machines. The N
stands for the German word of „no phone usage“.
From the very beginning, subscriber`s lines in Germany were four-core: a and b for voice channel, w for
bell and e for earth wire. Indeed nothing has changed up to now but the earth keys are only at senior PBXs
(private branch exchange) and modern phones need no separate w-core. So the telephone can be connected
directly to the a/b subscriber`s lines. Phones operate with direct current and the polarity is first of all not
fixed. In operation, a must be negative and b positive. So for the TAE wall outlets the polarity is fixed. As
shown at the drawing TAE wall outlets dispose of six interfaces: two inputs la and lb, two outputs a2 and
b2 and the already mentioned e and w cores.
Western-Verbinder / modular connectors
(IEC = Internationale Elektrotechnische Kommission)
The connection with modular technology is a variable installation system. The utilization flexibility renders the
connection of terminals of the telephone engineering and data transfer and further customerspecific range of
applications. The connections are according to IEC 603-7 standard. (IEC = International Electrotechnical Commission)
The modular connectors are also known by the name of RJ-xx connectors, while xx stands for a normidentification
number. This number indicates the pin connection and the outer shape of the connector. RJ
hereby stands for „registered jack“.
The most common modular connectors in the telephone business are RJ-11 plugs (6pins, 4pins connected,
shortly named 6/4) and RJ-12 plugs (6pins, all connected, shortly named 6/6).
For Network and ISDN usage, there is also a 8pin modular connector, which is also known as RJ-45 plug
(8pins, all connected, 8/8).
