Using RFID in learning factories. A Case study research of opportunities,
benefits and challenges at the FhA Lean Assembly
Studium: Masterstudium Business Informatics
BetreuerIn: Ao.Univ.Prof. Dr. Kurt Matyas
Companies are highly interested in optimizing their processes (e.g. logistic,
manufacturing) in order to increase their productivity or to reduce costs.
Different optimization concepts and technologies have been developed, but
their implementation with purely theoretical knowledge can be challenging.
Learning factories bridge theory and praxis by simulating specific scenarios to
easily and efficiently illustrate optimization possibilities in practice. Therefore,
the company staff learns about direct benefits and application of the previously
learned theory. RFID is a technology that can be used to optimize manufacturing
processes but it has not yet been adapted or used by many learning
factories. Especially in manufacturing processes further research is needed. The
goal of this thesis is to research opportunities, benefits and challenges of RFID
used in learning factories as well as to exploit the possible use of RFID in a
learning factory and show its implementation. To achieve this goal, existing
learning factories and RFID applications were analysed as well as RFID was
integrated into an existing learning factory, the FhA Lean Assembly, and a
software to exploit the potential of this technology was developed. The results
are three software tools to support the various setups of the lean assembly, to
communicate with the RFID hardware, to support staff during the practical
exercise (assembly) and to prepare and display data generated by the RFID
system. In this scenario four main benefits and three challenges have been
identified.
