DIE REVO STELLT EINEN NEUEN MEILENSTEIN
IN DER WEITERENTWICKLUNG TELESKOPISCHER
FRONTFEDERUNGSSYSTEME DAR.
UNGEFEDERTE MASSEN Als Fahrwerkstechniker stellt man immer wieder

THE REVO FROM GERMAN:A. REPRESENTS A
NEW MILESTONE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF
TELESCOPIC FRONT SUSPENSIONS
REVO AND OVAL
THE TEAR DROP SHAPE IN THE USD-CAMP
Already established and a standard in the motorcycle market, the USD forks
are still living in the shadows of the MTB market. And there’s a reason for
that: At the early stages of suspension fork development the Canti-brakes
were a main factor why the concept wasn’t established. The same goes
for thru axles: Not yet considered state-of-the-art, only few exotics were
brought to market.
Yet the concept of the USD can be considered the superior system in many
cases:
STABILITY The outer tubes with the large diameter are located above.
Therefore, they work as stand pipes which, in conventional telescopic
forks, are the inner tubes or stanchions with the smaller diameter that
are located above. To achieve adequate security and stiffness they must
be scaled accordingly which is achieved mainly through wall thickness.
Whereas the „oversized“ standpipes of the USD forks are stable and stiff
because of their bigger diameter! The larger the distance to the front axle
the more stable the fork must be dimensioned.
UNSPRUNG WEIGHTS As a suspension specialist, there’s always one
requirement: Unsprung weights must be as light as possible! Unsprung
weights are the wheels, the dip pipes of the fork, the brakes and the axles.
Since the dip pipes are much lighter and there’s no bridge to connect the
standpipes, the unsprung weights are as small as possible.
DIRT SENSITIVITY The internal dip pipes stick out below from the stanchions.
Dirt, dust, water, etc. casts off and does not accumulate on the seals
and wipers as is common in a conventional fork. Thus, the dirt is immediately
transported downwards, away from the interior of the fork.
LUBRICATION The lubrication needed for the stanchions is located inside
of the guide elements (bushings and seals). With each stroke, the lubricant
spreads over the working range of the stanchions. This ensures a perfect
lubrication and perfect light running at any time!
And if that isn’t enough, there’s always the looks of a USD fork. The dynamics
of the elements of the fork express a forcefulness that is also most
eminent in the high end motorcycle market.
Yet, everything mentioned above is not reason enough to favor the USD
concept.
Unfortunately, there’s also a disadvantage to USD forks. The low torsional
rigidity leads to a noticeable distortion of the fork especially when braking
with a single-sided disc. The Revo solves this problem with a small but
spectacular gimmick: The oval-shaped drip dip pipes guide an oval-shaped
piston which is form-fitted! The tubes are no longer able to rotate against
each other which is the reason for the low torsional rigidity in USD forks
without this gimmick!
And we didn’t mind the perfect aerodynamic profile caused by the drop
shape!
By the way: The internally running piston system works with an active overlapping
or telescoping guiding: While compressing the fork the distance
between the compressed bushings increases which also increases the stiffness
when braking and deflecting.
SUSPENSION DYNAMICS AT THE LOWEST WEIGHT, THE HIGHEST
Doch jedes Mountainbikekonzept
und jeder Einsatzbereich profitiert von leichten Komponenten,
die eine überlegene Funktion bieten.
Die Modelle 2014 wurden bei gleichzeitiger Erhöhung
der Sicherheit einmal mehr erleichtert. Während das neue
Modell „KILO No.1+“ mit High-Performance CFK-Fasertechnologie
INTEGRIERTES LENKERSYSTEM
Das Lenkersystem ist für die Serienproduktion in
2014 voll integriert und bietet für unterschiedliche
Einsatzzwecke verschiedene Einstellungen (Lenkerpositionen
und Lenkerstellung).
INTEGRATED HANDLEBAR
A further particularly spectacular highlight in the
Double XX is the optional integrated handlebar.
Combining over-all system weight with previously
unknown ergonomic adjustability. The easily adjusted
integrated steerer also enables various positions
for different riding stiles and uses.
We take our well established and race tested
XCITE technology up to a new level. Even more travel
(160 mm) and a even wider range of possible
uses require new and bold solutions. To insure maximum
stiffness with further increased travel and a
consequently further growing hub to crown width
a double bridge is the only viable option. Therefore
here are some facts about the double crown construction
principle:
Double Crown Design: For those wondering about
the maximum angle of turn, just stop and think
about it for a moment, in forward movement no
angle of turn larger than 90° becomes necessary
or viable. Nevertheless to ensure a maximum angle
of turn, the necessary offset has been integrated
into the crown itself. Besides it enables the use of
a “straight-dropout-design” with its further advantages
(stanchions and outer tubes point straight to
the front axle). This reduces weight while improving
stiffness.
INTEGRIERTES HMI (INTEGRATED HMI)
HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE
SYSTEME FÜR DIE E-MOBILITY
Die Zukunft hat begonnen: Wir läuten eine
neue Ära der Mobilität mit Leichtfahrzeugkonzepten
ein, die eine Herausforderung
an die Fahrwerkssystem solcher Fahrzeuge
stellen. Intelligenter Leichtbau, gepaart mit
hohem Sicherheitspotential – das ist die
Herausforderung, welcher sich german:A.
auch im Bereich hochwertiger Fahrrad-
Federsysteme bereits seit vielen Jahren
immer wieder aufs Neue stellt. Höheres
Fahrzeuggewicht und höhere Geschwindigkeiten
sind die neuen dynamischen
Anforderungen an die Fahrwerkskomponenten
von Pedelecs, E-Bikes und Elektro-
Motorrädern.
Selbstverständlich findet german:A. auch
für diese Komponenten gewichtsoptimale
Lösungen.
So wiegt beispielsweise die in dem E-Rider
von Conway verwendete Federgabel
Xcite Double XX incl. Lenkervorbaueinheit
sowie 20 mm Steckachssystem bei 160 mm
Federweg nur 2.650 g! Dabei ist sogar ein
integriertes Bedien- und Anzeigesystem
mit klassischen Tachofunktionen sowie für
die Steuerung von Pedelecs und E-Bikes
enthalten.
SYSTEMS FOR E-MOBILITY
The future has arrived: A new era of mobilityis
starting with very light vehicles
that challenge the design of suspension
systems of such vehicles. german:A. steps
up to the plate when designing high end
bicycle components that not only take into
consideration intelligent light weight design
but also put an emphasis on high level
safety potential. Increasing weight and
higher speed are the new dynamic challenges
for the suspension systems of pedelecs,
E-Bikes and electrical motorcycles.
german:A. offers a weightoptimized solution
for these components.
For example our fork Double XX which is
used in Conways E-Rider. With a travel of
160mm the weight is only 2650g including
stem, bar and 20mm axle system. And it
even comes with an integrated HMI with
in- and output of a classical tachometer as
well as the command for E-Bike systems.
ONE-POINT-FIVE VERSUS TAPERED?
Gewicht!
To make „the weakest link“ of the transmission safer, the size of the steerer was increased from 1 1/8“ to 1.5“.
In fact this increase helps significantly, but can not be implemented at the same weight. Although the thicknesses
of this highly loaded point can be reduced while increasing the strength, the overall weight will be higher.
„Tapered“ or the conical taper of the tube also leads to a high production cost of this solution.
At german:A. we like asking questions and we like giving answers. As the trend of 1.5 „or“ tapered „- headtubes
started, we didn’t only want to follow the trend but instead wanted to deal with the subject critically and
ask ourselves if and how we would implement the subject. Since “me too” isn’t really us, we found our own
solution for the most strained part of a fork. In a single track vehicle the suspension forces and the maximum
working loads are transmitted through the bearing of the steerer tube (steering head bearings, headset) into
the frame. The lower bearing is located on the steerer of the fork, this is the most critical point with the highest
loads and the biggest force leading to the maximum tension of the construction element.
HOW TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM? IT‘S ACTUALLY PRETTY EASY (AS WHITH MOST GOOD IDEAS)
The bearingseat was integrated into the crown of the fork! As a consequence, we now have an almost complete
decoupling of the suspension forces from the steerer tube! These forces are now lead directly through the bearing
(needle bearings, ball bearings) into the frame. The steerer tube is now only a functional part. It supports the
axial bearing forces (to minimize the clearance of the headset) and takes the forces of the handlebar through
the stem.
Therefore, the steerer tube can be designed very light and simple! No more chassis related tensions will occur
within the steerer tube. This also results in a high level of operational safety and minimum weight!
