Lebensretter. •
no longer fit for the purpose. the usual types are made
from polyethylene and have a service life of up to five
years. after that, they must be replaced. they often
become brittle because important plasticisers in the
plastic are broken down by uV light.
GUARDIAN ANGELS IN
TRAFFIC AND SPORTS
away from work as well, there are many situations in which a safety helmet must
or should be worn – in traffic, for example. in germany, riders and passengers of
mopeds and open motor vehicles with three or more wheels without seatbelts have
been required to wear a crash helmet by law since 1976. but there is no general
requirement to wear a crash helmet for motorcycle riders. even so, riders should
not set off on any journey without taking due precautions – this also applies to
the pursuit of many forms of recreation. the sport helmet is used in a wide variety
of sports, and must therefore also satisfy varying requirements: Cycle helmets are
light, ski and snowboard helmets are unaffected by temperature, motor cycle helmets
are designed to absorb as much energy as possible, climbing, football and ice
hockey helmets are strong, boxing helmets are padded from the inside out, diving
helmets are impermeable to water and air, kayaking helmets are water-resistant.
FAILURE TO WEAR A HELMET IS NEGLIGENT
there are also multipurpose helmets that are equally suitable for climbing, skating,
cycling and skiing. but all helmets have one thing in common: after a fall, they
can no longer be used and must be replaced. in general, it may be said that it is
an act of gross negligence not to wear a helmet when pursuing any of the sports
mentioned, particularly skiing. because wearing a helmet makes most accidents
milder. they may not always look pretty, they may sometimes even be awkward,
but protective helmets are little lifesavers. •
