Bei einer testfahrt erreichte die h1 eine sehr viel höhere genauigkeit als für den
gewinn des preisgeldes vorgeschrieben war. er erhielt es nicht, weil die länge der
testfahrt nicht ausreichend gewesen sei.
in den kommenden Jahren verbesserte er die technik seiner uhr und musste sich
immer wieder mit einem gelehrten gremium auseinandersetzen, das ihm stetig
steine in den weg legte. er baute zwei weitere uhren, die aber nicht getestet wurden,
da england im Krieg mit spanien war. 1759 stellte harrison die h4 vor. Mit 13
zentimetern durchmesser und 1,45 Kilogramm gewicht war sie viel kleiner als seine
vorgänger. die h4 bestand den test auf einer fahrt von england nach Jamaika
und zurück. Kritiker behaupteten danach, die genauigkeit sei zufällig und verweigerten
ihm das preisgeld. erst nach langen streitigkeiten und der intervention von
König georg iii., der drohte, persönlich vor dem parlament zu erscheinen, wurde
harrison 1773 – drei Jahre vor seinem tod – das preisgeld zugesprochen. heute
sind harrisons uhren im royal observatory in greenwich, das seit 1884 weltweit
den nullmeridian markiert, ausgestellt. sie funktionieren heute noch so präzise
wie vor 250 Jahren.

climatic zones, in heavy seas, and extremely damp conditions. the expert community
thought this impossible, but John harrison succeeded in making it a reality. in
1735 he presented his first model of a precision timepiece. temperature fluctuations
were compensated by a bimetallic strip, the roll of the ship by a spring that
connected the clock’s two pendulums. harrison called his creation h1. in a test
voyage, h1 achieved a much higher degree of accuracy than was specified in the
terms of the award. But he did not receive it. allegedly, the test voyage was not
long enough.
over the next few years, he improved the technology of his timepiece, and was
constantly engaged in battles with learned bodies that attempted to impede his
progress. he built two more clocks, but these were never tested because england
was at war with spain. in 1759, harrison unveiled h4. with a diameter of 13 centimetres
and weighing 1.45 kilograms, it was much smaller than its predecessors.
h4 passed its test on a sea journey from england to Jamaica and back. critics then
claimed that its accuracy was pure coincidence, and still refused to give him his
reward. it was only after long disputes and the intervention of King george iii,
who threatened to address parliament in person that the prize money was finally
handed over to harrison, in 1773, three years before his death. today, harrison’s
clocks are on display in the royal observatory in greenwich, which has served as
the international zero meridian since 1884. they are still working as accurately
today as they did 250 years ago.

neugeschaffene position des ausbildungsleiters und
verantwortet in dieser funktion die kaufmännischen
und technischen ausbildungsberufe.

führungswechsel
unser langjähriger geschäftsführer der hansa-fleX
ag schweiz, paul rentsch, geht in den verdienten
ruhestand. am 01.01.2011 übernahm fredi walter
die geschäftsführung. wir bedanken uns bei herrn
rentsch für sein außerordentliches engagement in
all den Jahren und wünschen herrn walter viel erfolg
in seinem neuen aufgabenbereich.
change of leadership
paul rentsch, our Managing director of
hansa-fleX ag schweiz, is retiring after many years
of outstanding service. he was succeeded as Managing
director by fredi walter on 1 January 2011. we
thank Mr. rentsch most sincerely for his unwavering
commitment to the company for so many years, and
wish Mr. walter every success in his new capacity.
