tun not, eine bessere Aus- und Fortbildung der in der Stadtarchäologie Tätigen
ist geboten . Neben der immer noch ausstehenden Etablierung der Archäologie
des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit an den Universitäten erscheint mir die Einrichtung
eines zentralen, länderübergreifenden Forschungsinstitutes für Archäologie
des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit, z.B . unter dem Dache des DAI
oder der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft dringend erforderlich .
Summary
Archaeology in smaller towns - from Buxtehude to Düsseldorf. Research
perspectives from an universitarian point of view
Archaeology in smaller towns has been neglected in Germany. Mostly work
has been done on a modest scale and level by amateurs or local authorities .
The future of archaeology will very much rely on county and town
archaeology financed by regional authorities . On the other hand it is obvious,
particularly because of restrictions both in organisation and funds, that
smaller towns need more attention from superregional rescue archaeology
(Landesarchdologie) . In comparison to larger towns the archaeological
treasures of smaller places are often much better preserved and will represent
most awarding perspectives for future research, not only for rescue but also for
problem orientated work. It will indeed be necessary to be aware not only of
pre-urban roots but also of the development in the later Middle Ages and
post-medieval times and to include thoroughly questions concerning the
material culture of these later periods . Smaller towns also offer a great
advantage towards a better understanding of the general development of
landscape and settlement. In many cases it is possible to find and do research
on town-hinterland connections, including the earlier centres before the
foundation of a market or town, and the problem of continuity or change from
protohistory to the late Middle Ages .
