1m Zuge der Dorferneuerungsmar..nahmen wurde der Kirchplatz, der fUr vielfaltige Funktionen haufig
genutzt wird (z. B. fOr kirchliche und weltliche Festveranstaltungen), Ende der BOer Jahre neu
gepflastert. An seinem alten Platz wurde ein - vor etwa 30 Jahren abgerissener - Kump (Endpunkt der

Summary
The development of historical small towns in the Paderborner area in the 19th
and 20th century. Remarks from applied historical geography on behalf of
town conservation and monuments conservation
The market towns of the Paderborn region, once relatively self-reliant and
autonomous, happened to see their transformation from the agrarian to the
industrial and the post-industrial society since the beginning of the century
and since the end of World War II in particular. This transformation is still in
progress. Like the guidelines of the applied sciences, the national programmes
to promote structural changes and to prevent crises ensuing from this
transformation are characterized by uncertainties and changes as well. As far
as the fabric of the old areas of the towns is concerned, structural frictions are
apparent: well-preserved, inhabited houses of the 18th and 19th centuries are
very often situated in the immediate vicinity of new and fully refurbished old
houses.
The good and clean condition of most of the buildings, streets, squares,
yards and gardens indicate that these small towns are well-to-do nowadays.
