measurable (P>0.05). Pectin is one component of dry cell wall material and its concentrations<br />

ranged between 0.04 and 0.6 % and remains invisible low in most presented figures.<br />

Also its concentration was very low compared to the calculated residual cell wall compounds,<br />

referred as non-pectin concentration. Neither the pectin concentration nor the nonpectin<br />

concentration reflected tubers blackspot susceptibility (P>0.05). Depending on the<br />

period of investigation the degree of esterification of pectin differed slightly between tubers<br />

differing in their blackspot susceptibility. Approximately 20 % to 60 % of the pectin<br />

chains were esterified. Nevertheless, the degree of esterification of the pectin was not correlated<br />

to the BSI of tubers.<br />

The other components refer to the cytoplasmatic compounds of potato tuber tissue and<br />

were calculated as the differences between the dry matter concentration and the summarized<br />

concentration of the starch and the dry cell wall material. The concentration of the<br />

cytoplasmatic components ranged between 2 % and 7 % depending on tubers specific<br />

gravity. However, a significant increasing concentration of the cytoplasmatic components<br />

with increasing specific gravity was not observed and the calculated concentration of the<br />

cytoplasmatic components were not related to tubers BSI (P>0.05).<br />
