• Longitudinal and transverse diameter of the testes:
Right: longitudinal: 1.2 cm (range: 0.67 – 1.89 cm);
transverse: 0.67 cm (range: 0.33 – 1.06 cm)
Left: longitudinal 1.36 cm (range: 0.87 – 1.95 cm);
transverse: 0.73 cm (range: 0.41 – 1.05 cm)
• Diameter of follicles:
Right: range: 0.21 – 1.17 cm
Left: range: 0.17 – 1.29 cm
• Diameter of eggs:
Longitudinal: 2.52 cm (range: 1.97 – 2.57 cm)
Transverse: 1.38 cm (range: 1 – 1.48 cm)
The comparison between x-ray and ultrasound examinations revealed an advantage of the
ultrasound method for the evaluation of the most inner organs (without using any contrast
medium). Exceptions were the lungs, the skeletal system and the intestine, filled with gas or
radiopaque material. These organs could be imaged only by radiography, while all other
organs could be found and evaluated more often and detailed by ultrasound. Gallbladder,
testes and kidneys were only detectable with ultrasound and could not be distinguished with
radiography in any case. The following blood chemistry and hematologic values were
examined in this study: alanin aminotransferase (ALT), albumin (Alb), alkaline phosphatase
(AP), inorganic phosphor (P), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), cholesterol (Chol), chloride
(Cl-), creatine kinase (CK), total bilirubin (Bili), total protein (GE), total calcium (Ca ges),
glucose (Glu), uric acid (UA), urea (Hast), ionic potassium (K+), ionic calcium (Ca2+) und
ionic sodium (Na+). For all these parameters reference values exist in the current literature.
In addition, four more parameters were evaluated in the present study, for which no reference
values were published so far: cholinesterase (CHE): 1680 U/L (range: 277 - 3690),
fructosamine (Fru): 303 µmol/L (range: 91 – 518), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH): 0.7
U/L (range: 0.2 – 4.7) and pH (pH): 7.48 (range: 7.24 – 7.72).
Feces from 24 patients could be collected and were examined for parasites. Therefore direct
smears were prepared from the fecal samples and a light microscope was used to identify the
species and estimate the amount of parasites present in the sample. Four different types of
endoparasites could be detected: oxyurids, Trichomonas ssp., Nyctotherus ssp., coccidians
(Isospora amphibulori) and limax amoebae.
