Conclusions<br />
The bioactive utilis<strong>at</strong>ion possibilities are excellent, especially regarding the extraction<br />
of innov<strong>at</strong>ive oils, press cake and aromas as well as the processing of peeled soft<br />
cores into high priced sweets and fancy foods. However, structures typical for Austria<br />
have to be taken into account when thinking of future processing of fruit stones, as<br />
the compar<strong>at</strong>ively small companies run by primary producers and potential<br />
customers mean th<strong>at</strong> expenses for transport will be high.<br />
Small amounts of fruit stone oils made from apricots and peaches (from South<br />
Eastern Europe) are occasionally available on the market, and distinguishing<br />
Austrian products from these will only be possible by means of extraordinary qualities<br />
specific to the region of origin. At the moment prune and cherry stones are regarded<br />
as favourites for home made innov<strong>at</strong>ions, especially, when it comes to oil production.<br />
Extending the raw m<strong>at</strong>erial range to elderberry, apple and pear pits should be taken<br />
into close examin<strong>at</strong>ion in the near future, since large amounts of this bio-m<strong>at</strong>erial are<br />
available locally.<br />
When upsizing, a positive cash flow can only be achieved within the first six years if<br />
production exceeds 200 tons of fresh stones and almost all produced goods are sold.<br />
A small plant with a capacity of 150 tons thus can hardly be profitable, but such a<br />
plant is wh<strong>at</strong> is required now to overcome technical difficulties and to secure<br />
economic calcul<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
As long as regional high quality products are widely accepted and successful in the<br />
market, the concept of KernCraft will soon spread – and probably be no longer just a<br />
n<strong>at</strong>ional, but an intern<strong>at</strong>ional phenomenon. Consequently, this could have neg<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
effects on the regional market if no <strong>at</strong>tention is paid to special qualities and<br />
intern<strong>at</strong>ional cooper<strong>at</strong>ions right from the start.<br />
These important reasons are why we are ambitious to build the KernCraft Austria<br />
Research Factory as soon as possible, both as a prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for a large commercial<br />
plant and as an intern<strong>at</strong>ional role model th<strong>at</strong> is working on regional solutions.<br />
