processing requirements of fruit stone processing are complex, there is a broad
range of worthwhile products: micronized and conditioned hard shell granulate, soft
cores, innovative fruit stone oils, press cake and the natural aromas to be taken from
it. USP (unique selling point) is the unadulterated, high quality natural product that is
of great appeal to the human senses: taste, aroma, wellbeing, health, indulgence and
natural luxury – this project is a perfect example for material amelioration and
sophistication in the context of sustainable economy.
In terms of an optimised and even more lucrative added value several product areas
– such as blasting abrasives, dental abrasives, oil production, new applications in
cosmetics, rich and aromatic power bars – were perfected and new insights for
potential investors were recorded.
The customers interested in products made from fruit stones (oils, press cake,
aromas) need relevant amounts of these materials to substantiate their product
development. A research plant is the necessary subsequent step to prepare these
quantities. Professional and suitable processing technologies of pilot plant scale that
make high demands regarding the quality of the raw material and their food-safe
processing are required for the varying added values. The technical parameters for
these passes are available and the necessary equipment is known.
From the technological point of view, processing of very different fruit stones in one
plant is possible. If the stones are dried straight after removing the fruit a brushing
machine (CIMBRIA) can be used instead of going through the extensive process of
washing the stones. Calibration or sorting according to size with a sieve machine
(CIMBRIA) can be considered state-of-the-art. Rotten or mouldy stones can be
eliminated by means of the fine selection machine CORAVEL (Helms Technology),
however, both soft- and hardware still need to be adapted to the specific
requirements of the respective fruit.
Once the stones are cleaned and sorted according to size, they are moved on to the
– yet to be modified – cylinder breaking mill, where a complete and gentle cracking of
the hard shells is to be achieved. There still is some development work to be done,
but the basic feasibility has been proved. The mixture of hard shell fragments and
soft cores then is separated entirely in flat screen machines and a gravity separator.
The basic structure of this technology already exists for crop processing, to use it for
fruit stone separation certain adaptions and fine adjustments need to be made. The
final selection of hard shell fragments from the soft core again takes place in the
CORAVEL (Helms Technology). For this step in separation hard- and software again
need to be adjusted. There are two ways of separating the seed hull from the soft
core, should this be necessary: by using blanching equipment (wet) or a short
roasting process (dry). Roasting ameliorates aroma and taste of oil and press cake,
but it is unnecessary for cosmetic purposes. The technology for this procedure can
be taken from the processing of hazelnuts and almonds, with slight adaptions being
made where necessary. Oil can be extracted either via plunger or screw extrusion
