applicable design concepts and their advantages and disadvantages and additionally to show
the expected cost levels and make them comparable to each other. The chapter concludes
with a self-developed typology key which simplifies the process of making extensive catalogues
and comparisons in an easily understandable presentation.
6.3 Conclusion
The roundabout, from a traffic planning point of view, is an important, modern and notably
effective instrument to current traffic management. Since the beginning of their existence,
roundabouts have been apart of traffic management research and have been gradually optimized.
At the same time, examining the roundabouts from a creative, architectural design
point of view is still a nearly unexploited field of work.
It became clear that to activate this unused potential it is essential to examine roundabouts
from an interdisciplinary perspective in the future.
As a result of this work, one has a text which goes beyond the current points of view and
most importantly explores new views and possibilities. It also provides a compendium which
coherently presents all of the methods that impact roundabout design, including traffic
planning, user considerations and creative design.
In addition, with the typology key, successfully a tool could be developed which will help
designers that are unfamiliar with roundabouts to carry out the required working steps like
categorising, comparing and visualizing roundabouts in a very easy and fast method. As a
result, there is now an organizational instrument for gathering and looking at roundabouts
and their creative design comprehensively.
In spite of this analysis, the future of the roundabouts is still not to be predicted unambiguously.The
principle reason for the low adoption of the creative design potentials lies not with
underdeveloped or poorly conceived design concepts, but with the understanding of the
planners, users and decisive bearers for these spaces. This understanding will need to
change for the potential to be realized.
The traffic planning, sociological and landscape architectural frameworks for a new design of
roundabouts exist. The knowledge about the potential that these spaces hold must merely
spread and be communicated to all the proper stakeholders.
It would be desirable if this work contributes, through increased awareness of the readers,
to a new understanding of roundabouts and their space in the future.
