Stoffwechsel: Proteinbiosynthese Kettenstart bei Eukaryonten: Kettenstart ähnelt dem der Prokaryonten, wobei Unterschiede nur im Detail existieren: 1) deutlich größere Anzahl an Initiationsfaktoren (Bezeichnung: eIF-n; oft mehr als 20); 2) Translation beginnt immer am ersten AUG der mRNA (keine Shine-Dalgarno-Sequenz) (eIF-4 ist ein Cap-Bindungsprotein und vermittelt die Bindung der kleinen 40S-UE an das 5‘- Ende (‘Cap‘) der mRNA gefolgt von einem Stromabwärtswandern bis zum ersten AUG- Startcodon – keine Translation cyclischer mRNA durch Eukaryonten möglich); 3) Translation beginnt zwar mit Methionin, letzteres ist aber nicht formyliert. Kettenverlängerung: erfolgt mit einer Geschwindigkeit von bis zu 40 Aminosäure-Resten pro Sekunde! Kettenverlängerung ist einem 3-stufigen Prozeß, wobei die jeweils hinzukommende Aminosäure an den C-Terminus der wachsenden Polypeptidkette angeknüpft wird; Kettenverlängerung erfordert die Teilnahme mehrerer nicht-ribosomaler Proteine (=Elongationsfaktoren )
