Dear Fulbrighters and Friends of the Fulbright Program,
The German-American Fulbright Commission, established on
July 18, 1952, will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2012.
That we can mark this anniversary in the context of a relationship
between our two nations defined by cooperation and
mutual respect is due in no small part to the 42,000 Germans
and Americans who have participated in the Fulbright program
over the last 60 years.
The architect of the Fulbright program, Senator J. William
Fulbright, died in 1995, but I had the honor of meeting his
widow, Harriet Fulbright, when she visited Berlin in 2011.
Mrs. Fulbright said that her late husband never imagined this
exchange would be so successful. He was surprised and gratified
by the international growth of the Fulbright program and by its
resilience. The fact that, six decades after the establishment of the
program in Germany, Fulbright is still relevant is a tremendous
compliment to the German-American Fulbright Commission.
The Commission’s innovation in programming, grants, and
fundraising has assured the continued vibrancy of Fulbright and
promises that it will be just as relevant for the next sixty years.
It is a great honor for me to serve as the Chair of the German-
American Fulbright Commission. As I complete my final year at
the U.S. Embassy in Berlin and as Chair, I am proud of the work
we have done together. I look forward to the continued collaboration
between the United States and the Federal Republic of
Germany and to the lasting positive impact the German-American
Fulbright Program will have on our enduring partnership.
