The media
The campaign was a hit in the media. Over its course,
the Deutscher Frauenrat compiled 260 media
queries and reports, approximately 40 percent of
which were from abroad (over 20 countries). The
reports ranged from sober to sensation-seeking, and
from well-researched to thoroughly unqualified.
Of 184 reports analysed from the print and online
media, the tone of 150 ranged from neutral to
positive, and only 34 were negative or dismissive
regarding the campaign and its concern.
Many reports, however, either equated or at least
did not distinguish between human trafficking/
forced prostitution and legal/voluntary prostitution.
Media from the USA, France and Sweden, especially,
concentrated on the legal status of prostitution
in Germany. Their persistent questions made it
necessary to repeatedly explain the differences
between prostitution and forced prostitution, the
legal foundations and intended effects of German
legislation on prostitution, and the reasons why
this legislation represents an important first
step in improving protection for prostitutes.
