In the final report of work package 2 a further investigation of the collective of interven-
tional cardiologists and radiologists and of flight crew members was therefore recom-
mended. The results of work package 2 were discussed in detail with BfS. As a result the
BfS commissioned the further piloting of both collectives.
6.3 Results of work package 3
An epidemiological study is feasible in principle in both investigated collectives.
- Taking into account the expected participation rates, both collectives are large enough
to detect a difference in prevalence of 23 % to 10 % (as seen in the first few studies on
interventionally acting doctors (Ciraj-Bjelac et al. 2010b)) with a statistical power of
80%.
- For both collectives, a non-exposed comparison collective can be recruited among their
colleagues.
- The collectives are homogenous concerning many factors so that even internal compari-
sons have a high validity.
- For both collectives the registration of risk factors and potential confounders can be
carried out in the same way and in a fashion comparable to former studies by using
questionnaires.
- Radiation exposure of the lens during work can be reconstructed, even historically, in
both cases. The registration of necessary data can be donepreparative. For the estimation
of radiation doses it is useful to include the results of current research of the EU-
founded project ORAMED (Carinou et al. 2011; Domienik et al. 2011; Gualdrini et al.
2011) and of ICRP (update of Volume 74 (Petoussi-Henß 2011)). For interventional
cardiologists and radiologists, a validation of dose estimation using measurementswith
thermoluminescence dosemeters in cooperation with the ORAMED research group is
highly desirable.
- Lens opacities can be objectively documented in a standardised way and classified with
reliable procedures. A comparability with some international studies (among others
those of atom bomb survivors (Jacob et al. 2010b; Mrena et al. 2011; Neriishi et al.
2007)) is therefore feasible.
