Basic functions of the DAC 8
The basic functions of the DAC 8, described in this chapter are always available, regardless of
the selected source.
Volume control
(can be
disabled)
Operation with
active
loudspeakers
or power
amplifiers
Operation with
integrated- or
preamplifiers
Source switching
All the source buttons have dual functions. The LED above the
corresponding button shows which source is selected.
For example, if the LED above the button glows red, the optical
input ‘OPT’ is set; if the LED glows green, the BNC input is active.
Select the digital input to which you have connected the source device
you wish to play; this may require two presses on the source buttons
, , and on the machine or the remote
control handset.
As soon as the source device is delivering digital music data, the DAC 8
automatically sets itself up to match the format and sampling rate of the
signal; you can then listen to the music signal.
Pre amplifier function
The DAC 8 can also be operated without an preamplifier, i.e. with active
loudspeakers or power amplifiers connected directly to it. For 'Standalone'
mode the device features a high-quality volume control. The
volume control section can be bypassed by a gold contact relay to be
completely removed from the audio signal path.
It is possible to disable the volume control if you wish. This is
accomplished by setting the switch on the back of the DAC 8 to ‘LINE’.
The volume of the DAC 8 can be adjusted in fine increments (1 dB steps)
using the - + button. A brief press on one volume button
increases or reduces the volume by one increment. Holding one of the
volume buttons pressed in causes the volume to change continuously.
The volume level is set and stored separately for the analogue outputs
and the headphone output.
If operated with active speakers or power amplifiers volume can be
controlled through the volume control of the DAC 8. To enable the DAC 8
volume control section, please switch to 'VRBL' (variable) on the
DAC 8`s back panel.
To achieve the highest possible audio quality with integrated amplifiers
we recommend to bypass the volume control of the DAC 8 by switching
the switch on the back panel to the setting 'LINE'. In this case volume
and tone are adjusted on the amplifiers.
