korrupter Praktiken in Nigeria selbst in schwere Krisen geraten waren.
So besaßen
Nigeria has one of the largest financial markets in West Africa. After an extensive “clean-up”
of the banks in the year 2009, 24 commercial banks, five discount banks, five development
finance institutions, countless certified bureaux de change and a number of insurance
companies remained. Among the commercial banks, the First Bank of Nigeria, the United
Bank of Africa and the Zenith International Bank should be mentioned. The Nigerian Stock
Exchange reached a total market capital of 8.5 trillion Naira in July 2009.
The government and Central Bank saved nine banks in 2009 thanks to cash injections (about
$4 billion Dollars) and the assumption of loans which were strongly affected by the global
financial crisis but also by the rampant corruption in Nigeria itself. The continuation of the
banking sector reform and the strengthening of banking supervision are the main aims of the
national fiscal policy.
The financial service sector is still in the early stages of its development. In the year 2007,
29% of all Nigerian citizens did not have their own banking account. The past few years have
witnessed the growth of the use of cashless transactions. Periodical payments and
transactions such as school fees, tickets for sport events and airlines, subscriptions, medical
bills, taxes and much more are increasingly carried out directly between bank accounts and
the odd wad of cash hidden under the mattress or buried in the ground is becoming an
increasingly rare phenomenon.
