The number of Internet connections is rising slowly and DSL usage is low in comparison with
other countries with a similar use of the Internet. Estimations assume that 51.1% of Internet
users rely on wireless satellite connections (VSAT), 24% use broadband wireless LAN, 9.3%
dial-up modems and only 3.4% DSL. Compared with the low standard of living, the number
of internet users is relatively high at almost 44 million (in the year 2010), whereas many
either use their mobile phones or go to a cyber café to access the Internet. The costs for a
domestic Internet connection are high. In 2007, the price of installation was 75,000 ₦
(€335) and the monthly fee for a flat-rate connection was between 5,000 and 12,000 ₦ (€22
to €53) on average. Access via mobile phone is considerably cheaper and prices have
dropped in recent years.

Internetcafés sind sehr weit verbreitet. Viele Cafés haben von den frühen Morgenstunden bis
zum späten Abend/Nacht geöffnet. Manche sogar 24 Stunden am Tag. Neben dem Surfen,
bieten viele Internetcafes auch Snacks und Getränke und sogar Sim Karten für Handys an.
