10. Telekommunikation/ Telecommunication
10.1 Allgemeines / General Information
By African standards, telecommunication has significantly improved in the recent years. This
applies particularly to the mobile phone network but also to the Internet. Due to mobile phone
GSM technology and the large number of internet cafés, internet access is also possible for
the poor. The number of land lines has remained stable, however, due to the outdated,
poorly serviced telephone lines.
According to the current quarterly report from January 2011 of the “Nigerian Economy
Outlook”, the telephone network density increased from 53% to 60% in 2010. A further
growth and expansion of the telecommunication sector is expected this year.
