The most important ports are in Lagos (Apogen and Tin Can Island, transshipment in both
ports 20.1 million metric tons in the year 2005), Port Harcourt (3.9 million tons) and Warri
(1.8 million tons). Crude oil is exported from more than a dozen terminals, among them Port
Harcourt being the largest with 19.5 million tons in 2005.
For inland navigation, there are over 3,000 km of navigable waterways. Domestic shipping is
focuses on the two main rivers Benue and Niger. The most important inland ports are
Onitsha, Ajaokuta, Yelwa, Baro and Lokoja (Niger River) and Makurdi, Ibi, Lau, Numan, Yola
(Benue River). Inland navigation does not play an important role anymore for cargo transport.
It is estimated that 100,000 tons are transported on inland waterways per annum- less than
10% of the total cargo in all Nigerian seaports.

9. Post/ Postal System
Die Post (Nigerian Postal Service - NIPOST) ist ein staatlich betriebenes Unternehmen und
wurde 1987 gegründet. Im Unternehmen sind insgesamt über 20.000 Mitarbeiter in über
5000 Poststellen landesweit beschäftigt.
Das nigerianische Postleitzahlensystem ist sechsstellig und beginnt mit 100001 (Lagos) und
endet 982002 (Benue State). Das Land ist nach Postleitzahlen in neun Regionen unterteilt,
wobei die erste Ziffer für die Region steht, die zweite und dritte Ziffer für das jeweilige
Versanddepot und die letzten drei Ziffern für den Zustellbezirk.
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) is a state-owned company and was founded in 1987.
Today it has more than 20,000 employees operating in more than 5,000 post offices
throughout the country. The Nigerian post code system is six-digit, starting from the
Postcode 100001 (Lagos) and ending in 982002 (Benue State). For the postal code system,
the country is divided into nine regions, with the first digit standing for the region, the second
and third digit for the respective dispatch depot and finally the last three digits for the postal
zone.
Neben normalen Postdienstleistungen bietet NIPOST auch zusätzliche Dienste an:
Passagiertransporte, Verkauf und Erneuerung von Funk- und Bohrlizenzen, Auszahlungen
von Renten (im Auftrag der Regierung oder anderen Agenturen), Vertrieb von
Prüfungsformularen (WAEC, NECO; JAMB), Vertrieb und Verkauf von
Bewerbungsformularen, Aktien, Verkauf und Einzug von Versicherungspolicen. In Regionen
mit geringer Poststellendichte werden die Bewohner von Postal Agents mit postalischen
Dienstleistungen versorgt.
Besides common postal services, NIPOST also offers additional services: passenger
transport, sales and renewal of drilling and radio/TV licenses, payment of pensions (on
behalf of the government or other agencies), distribution of examination forms (WAEC,
NECO, JAMB), distribution and sale of application forms, shares, and the sale and
distribution of insurance policies. Areas with a low density of post offices are supplied by
postal agents.
Zustelldauer: maximal 24 Stunden innerstädtisch, 48 Stunden im näheren Ortsbereich und
maximal 72 landesweit.
Im Allgemeinen gilt der Postdienst zumindest bei der Inlandspost als verlässlich. Zu
Verzögerungen kann es bei Zustellungen aus dem Ausland kommen. In einigen Fällen
werden sogar Schmiergeldzahlungen für die Aushändigung von Paketen verlangt. Pakete
sollten nach Möglichkeit bei einem internationalen Kurierdienst aufgegeben werden.
