The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has over 3,505 kilometres of railway tracks,
including three main lines:
a) The Western railway: Lagos to Kano (via Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbombosho, Kaduna)
b) The Eastern railway: Port Harcourt to Maiduguri (via Aba, Enugu, Makurdi, Jos)
c) The Central railway: Kaduna-Kafanchan (179 km),
and 329 km of standard gauge tracks. By way of an expansion and rehabilitation program
scheduled to last until 2025, all larger cities shall be connected to the national rail network,
tracks laid into the neighbouring countries and the entire railway network modernised. In
Lagos a trans-rapid network is planned. NRC transport activity (2005): 753,000 passengers;
93,762,000 million tons of freight.
Since the rail network and the wagons have been neglected over several years, most
passenger routes have been cancelled. Currently (2010) the route from Lagos to Kano is
served every second Friday, with departure from Lagos at 12:00 p.m. midnight. A first class
ticket including berth was 2,670 ₦ in the year 2008, according to the present exchange rate
about 12 Euros. Nevertheless, the route has become unreliable in the past, meaning you
should check at Lagos main station prior to the departure time that the train is still running.
8.6 Reisebusse/ Coaches
Coaches are another method for overland travel. The greatest advantage of coaches is that
opposed to Danfos and Bush Taxis, you have your own seat and can enjoy more legroom.
Some coaches also offer comfortable extras: air conditioning, toilets and video players.
However, many coaches are not well maintained and most overland routes start in the late
afternoon, so that overnight travel is often necessary - a potential danger given the bad road
conditions. Furthermore, there have been incidents of coaches being ambushed by armed
groups in remote places, so think twice before taking a journey by bus. If you consider
travelling with a tour coach operator, “ABC Transport” can be recommended. This company
also offers tours into the neighbouring West African countries like Benin, Togo or Ghana. A
one-way trip from Lagos to Abuja can be booked for 4,200 ₦ (€20). (Figures from March
2011)
