Nigeria kann seine Menschen nur mühevoll aus eigener Kraft ernähren. Das Land ist
auf ergänzende Importe (2008: 6 % der Gesamteinfuhr) angewiesen. 2003-2005
galten 9% der Bevölkerung als unterernährt. Pro Kopf und Tag standen 2600 Kalorien
zur Verfügung. 2007 lag die Pro-Kopf-Erzeugung von Nahrungsmitteln etwa auf
demselben Niveau wie 1999/2001.
Nigeria is barely capable of feeding its large population, with the country still
dependent on additional food imports (in the year 2008; 6% of total imports were food
imports alone). During the period from 2003 to 2005, 9% of the population was
considered to be malnourished with 2,600 calories per capita/day. In 2007 the
produce of food per capita was at roughly the same level as in the period from 1999
to 2001.

2008 waren 58 % der Erwerbstätigen im Agrarsektor beschäftigt. Dieser erzielte 29,4
% des BIP. Infolge der Dominanz von Öl und Gas ist der Exportanteil unbedeutend.
Im Jahre 2007 waren 43,4 % der Landflächen im Süden für Ackerbau und weitere
42,8 % im Norden für Viehzucht geeignet. Neben Millionen von Kleinbauern gibt es
Großfarmen, die zum Teil in ausländischem Besitz sind. Produziert werden
Nahrungsmittel, Exportfrüchte (Cash Crops) und illegale Rauschmittel (Cannabis).
Zur Steigerung der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion stellt der Staat günstige Kredite
und Subventionen bereit.
In 2008, 58% of Nigeria’s work force was occupied in the agricultural sector. This
sector alone generated 29.4% of the country’s GDP. Due to the dominance of oil and
gas, the export share is essentially insignificant. In 2007, 43.4% of Nigeria’s surface
area was suitable for farming (especially in the South) and an additional 42.8% was
suitable for livestock breeding (especially in the North). Besides millions of small
farmers, there are also large farms (which are partly foreign-owned). Production
includes food, cash crops and also illegal narcotic substances (cannabis). To
revitalize agriculture, the state provides reasonable loans and subsidies.

Forstwirtschaft
Nach massiven Eingriffen in der Natur waren 2007 noch 11,3% des Staatsgebietes
(vorw. Im Süden) von Wald bedeckt. Kommerzielle Forstwirtschaft findet primär im
Delta statt. (0,4% des nationalen BIP).
