Respiratory infections are on the rise in Nigeria. Especially pneumonia is one of the most
frequent causes for hospitalisation in children under 5 years. According to clinical studies,
respiratory infections constitute one of the most frequent causes of death due to an AIDS
infection in Nigeria, with a mortality rate of about 20%. In Abuja, 60% of all persons infected
with HIV were admitted into hospital with pneumonia, of those, 71.4% died. In the city of
Ilorin, 46.3% of all fatalities amongst HIV-positive children were due to pneumonia.
There is a high risk of diarrhoeal diseases throughout the country. 15% of all fatalities among
children below the age of 5 were contributed to diarrhoea-related diseases in the year 2008.
One reason for this is the significant lack of sanitation facilities. Water should be boiled
before drinking and only peelable fruits and vegetables should be eaten. Ice cubes and icecream
should be avoided when possible.
3. Das Bildungssystem in Nigeria/ The Educational System in Nigeria
3.1 Allgemeines/ General Information
The Nigerian school system is structured according to a 6-3-3-4 system. This includes
attendance at an elementary educational institution (primary school) for the first six years,
then three years junior secondary school, three years secondary school and finally four years
at a tertiary institution (university, polytechnic college, teaching college). The school
curriculum is based on the British model. However, many universities shifted to the US-
American curriculum in the early 90s. There is compulsory education in Nigeria lasting nine
years and requiring attendance at elementary school and the first three years of secondary
school (junior secondary school).
