In 1999, the then newly-elected president Olusegun Obasanjo made a nation-wide anti-AIDS
prevention and treatment program the top priority of his government’s targets. Nevertheless
it is estimated that only a tenth of all HIV-positive- women received anti-retroviral treatment in
the year 2006 and only 7% of all pregnant women infected with HIV received preventative
treatment to reduce the risk of HIV infection through MTCT (infection of the baby via breastfeeding).
The main transmission path of HIV in Nigeria is still unprotected (heterosexual) intercourse.
Reasons for this are the lack of sexual hygiene and the insufficient acceptance of
contraceptives as an effective method of protection against AIDS/HIV. This is also a reason
for the high rate of STDs in Nigeria. Women in particular are often affected by AIDS,
accounting for 56% of all AIDS-infected persons.
There is also a high risk of HIV transmission via infected blood. Only very few hospitals in
Nigeria can provide the necessary equipment to test stored blood for contamination, so the
chances of receiving infected blood are high. Due to this risk, the Nigerian Ministry of Health
has adopted regulations meaning that only blood from the National Blood Transfusion
Service (NTBS) will be accepted in the future, since it has more advanced capabilities for
blood screening.
2.5.2 Hepatitis
Laut der NGO Society for Gastroenterology
Land dringend angeraten.
Hepatitis is far more widespread than HIV. According to the NGO Society for
Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN), 20 million Nigerians are infected with
the hepatitis B Virus (HBV) at present and a further 5 million with the hepatitis C Virus (HCV).
The main transmission paths of hepatitis are sexual relations (especially homosexual ones),
needle and syringe use and exchange. However, blood transfusions, acupuncture or
tattooing also carry a certain risk of hepatitis infection. Babies can also become infected via
breast milk. Vaccinations against Hepatitis A and B before entering the country are highly
recommended.
