highest single category it represents only half of the total metaphors of the
sociological concept. The metaphors expressed here are “HEALTH AS APROCESS,
PATTERN, REGULATION, INTERACTION, UTILIZATION, FUNCTION“.
Interestingly, in the fields of evaluation of thinking, speaking and acting regarding
health the top three categories (“OSP”, “orientation”, “STC”) are consistently
represented, although in different orders. While thoughts and imagination of health
are mainly expressed by metaphors of “OSP” followed by “STC” and “representation”,
communication and practice are headed by metaphors of “orientation” followed by
“OSP” and “STC”. Frequent metaphoric expressions in the field of thinking are:
HEALTH AS UNDERSTANDING, PERSPECTIVE, WELL-BEING, INSTRUMENT,
OBJECT, ENERGY, POTENTIAL, PICTURE, MODEL, EXPRESSION, VIEW”.
In the field of speaking are the following metaphors used most frequently:
HEALTH AS APPROACH, GUIDE, DIRECTION, WAY, SEARCH, GOAL, BELIEF,
UNDERSTANDING, AWARENESS, PERCEPTION, SENSATION, PRODUCTION,
TENSION, MOVEMENT, FORCE.“
Preferred metaphors in the practical context are:
HEALTH AS INTUITION, BELIEF, FOCUS, EXPERIENCE, PERCEPTION,
TARGET, GOAL, DIRECTION, GUIDANCE, ATTENDANCE, ACCOMPANIMENT,
CHANGE, PROCESS, PATTERN, CONTROL, FUNCTION, MOVEMENT.“
In the field of „social/psychological/ethical“ implications the category „rule and
regulations“ appears as the most dominant, which might refer to a conscious concept
of morally and ethically „normative“ behaviour within the expectation of social and
medical care. However the following four categories (“OSP”, “visual”, “relation” and
“orientation”) have all the same percentage of metaphors indicating that this
normative understanding of social/psychological/ethical aspects of health is very
much structured by the concepts of intero- and exteroceptive sensory experiences
and the concepts of association and dissociation. Also it should be mentioned that in
this field there was a strong influence of individual preference of metaphors with a
specific socio-cultural context.
