How are these thoughts and ideas communicated intra- and interdisciplinary?
How do they relate to the communication in the therapist-patient relationship?
In which way do these metaphors influence the therapeutic work and how are
therapeutic experiences articulated through metaphors for health?
What is the role of social, psychological or ethical aspects of health in
osteopathy and how are they integrated?
And how can health be sensed through palpation and manual techniques?
What does health feel like?
The study should produce quantitative and qualitative results of the metaphoric
concepts used by osteopaths. The results of the qualitative analysis might suggest
which mental model is at the basis of the process of acquiring, communicating and
applying osteopathic understanding of health and how it is able to direct, modify or
control it. Which psychological, social or cultural context could help to understand
how health is generated, communicated and practiced in osteopathy?
6.2 Hypothesis and preliminary assumptions
Abstract terminology like health are primarily conceptualized metaphorically in
osteopathy. Metaphoric conceptualization helps transfer osteopathic thought, speech
and practice into common understanding and perception. Terms and concepts, e.g.
health, which are difficult to access and comprehend can be understood and
communicated more easily when using metaphors. Osteopathic experience can be
articulated and discussed in a better way.
