PTM applies all engine power to the road In the new Cayenne S Diesel, the combination of a powerful eight-cylinder and eight-speed Tiptronic S has an ideal partner in the form of PTM active all- wheel drive. This Porsche Traction Management sys- tem was specially configured for the sporty, highly dy- namic Cayenne models, because its broad range of torque distribution offers benefits in terms of vehicle dynamics, agility and traction pre-control and comple- ments the performance-oriented character of the cars. PTM also has the automatic brake differential (ABD) for improved traction control, anti-slip control (ASR) for improved vehicle stability and a switchable hill con- trol assistant (Porsche Hill Control, PHC) for controlled descents on steep hills. Porsche Traction Management with active all-wheel drive directly applies power to the rear axle. The extre- mely compact transfer case of the all-wheel drive is a so-called hang-on solution in a separate housing that follows the transmission. The multi-plate clutch that features electronic control by an electric motor regula- tes the distribution of drive power to the front axle with full variability, and there is no fixed base distribu- tion. If slip increases at the rear wheels, e.g. during acceleration, a stronger response by the multi-plate clutch distributes more power to the front wheels. By permanently monitoring the driving state, the system is able to react to different driving situations as well as to driver wishes. This is enabled by auxiliary control of the active all-wheel drive system that is tuned to vehic- le dynamics; it can react based on the driving situation and even preventively – before undesirable slip occurs at one axle. An example: When the driver steers into a bend, the lateral guiding forces of the steered wheels are increased by reducing the drive torque at the front axle, which enables high levels of agility and transverse acceleration. As the driver then accelerates out of the bend, the drive torque is optimally distributed for ma- ximum traction at both axles. Three offroad modes: offroad rocker switch The wide-ranging offroad capabilities of the Cayenne S Diesel can be modified over various stages by a central offroad rocker switch on the centre console. All sys- tems are then optimised for offroad use, with the goal of improving traction on unpaved surfaces. In offroad mode 1, all relevant systems in addition to the hill descent assist, such as ABS, are also switched to a trac- tion-oriented offroad mode. If the Cayenne S Diesel is 124

equipped with the air suspension and PASM options, the offroad setting is activated. It is also possible to select the special offroad level via the rocker switch for the air suspension system, in order to further increase the approach and departure angles and the ramp ang- le as well as fording depth. If the driver selects offroad mode 2, the longitudinal clutch is locked up to 100 per cent for better traction in difficult offroad conditions. The electronically con- trolled rear differential lock of the optional Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) is integrated in the all -wheel drive control. Fully automatically, it provides for suitable metering of power on especially poor off- road surfaces. If a rear wheel begins to spin on a slip- pery or loose-packed surface, the differential lock res- tores traction by intelligently redistributing drive power to the other rear wheel. When conditions requi- re it, another press of the offroad rocker switch selects offroad mode 3 which fully locks the rear differential. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus for even greater agility Performance and stability of the Cayenne S Diesel can be optimised even further with the new optional Por- sche Torque Vectoring (PTV Plus). PTV Plus operates with variable torque distribution to the rear wheels and an electronically controlled rear differential lock. Cars PTV Plus improves steering behaviour and steering precision by specific brake interventions at a rear wheel; its control is based on the steering angle and steering rate, accelerator pedal position, yaw rate and vehicle speed. Stated more precisely: In a dynamic sty- le of driving, turning the steering wheel results in slight braking of the wheel at the inside of the bend. This gives the rear wheel at the outside of the curve greater drive force, which generates additional turning force in the steered direction. This results in more direct and dynamic steering into the bend. PTV Plus significantly enhances agility and steering pre- cision at low and moderate speeds. The electronically controlled rear differential lock provides for better dri- ving stability, especially when accelerating quickly out of fast driven bends or if wheelspin is occurring. Even on split roadway surfaces, or when roads are wet or snow covered, the system interacts with Porsche Trac- tion Management and Porsche Stability Management to offer benefits in driving stability. In offroad use, PTV Plus reduces slip at the rear wheels. In addition, brake interventions are specifically adapted to offroad use. From the offroad rocker switch on the centre console, the rear differential lock can be locked up to 100 per cent. 125
