Abstract
What’s the matter? Concepts of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis in
Physiotherapeutic Practice. Background: Communication and counselling have become
an important issue within physiotherapy. Personal Existence Analysis/ Logotherapy
(EA/LT) with its concept of four Fundamental Motivations (GM) is a means which has
been proven beneficial in a variety of disciplines. Up to date, EA/LT has not been studied
for physiotherapeutic purposes. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate
whether the GM can be observed in a physiotherapeutic setting and if, which ones.
Methods: Two 10 minute videos of a physiotherapeutic treatment session from a
communication training with standardised patients who were chosen by purposive
sampling, subdivided into sequences, transcribed and then analysed qualitatively by
identifying the four GM according to EA/LT-references. Results: The GM were to be
found in all video-sequences, the 1. GM being predominate with its aspects of: ability,
space, protection, support. Conclusion: The four GM according to EA/LT can clearly be
found in a physiotherapeutic setting. GM-specific questions are suggested for practical use
in physiotherapy. It is postulated that the 4 GM could be a means to perceive and manage
potentials and difficulties met in physiotherapeutic practice. Keywords: Communication,
Counselling, Motivation, Psychology.
