inmal im Jahr wechselt Frank Kemperman
(rechts), Turnierdirektor des CHIO Aachen, die
Seiten und wird zum Journalisten. Diesmal trifft
er auf Pénélope Leprevost (29) und Kevin Staut (29). Die
beiden gehören zu dem Team, das im vergangenen Jahr den
Mercedes-Benz Preis, Teil des Meydan FEI Nations Cup,
für Frankreich gewinnen konnte. Leprevost war zudem eine
der erfolgreichsten Reiterinnen des Turniers, Staut sicherte
sich später im Jahr noch den Titel des Europameisters. Und –
Überraschung für Kemperman –: Leprevost und Staut kamen
Hand in Hand zum Gespräch anspaziert. >>

O
nce a year Frank Kemperman (right), tournament
director of the CHIO Aachen, changes his
hat and becomes a journalist. This time he met
up with Pénélope Leprevost (29) and Kevin Staut (29).
They are both members of the French team that last year
won the Mercedes­Benz Prize, part of the Meydan FEI
Nations Cup. In addition Leprevost was one of the most
successful riders of the show, and later in the year Staut
won the European Championship. And (a surprise for
Kemperman) Leprevost and Staut walked hand in hand
into their interview. >>

Frank Kemperman: Ich wusste gar nicht, dass Sie
beide ein Paar sind…
Kevin Staut: Das war aber keine Frage von Ihrer Liste,
oder? (lacht)
Kemperman: Nein, nein. Aber ich habe Meredith
letztes Jahr versprochen, dass ich eine Baby-Ecke in
Aachen einrichten werde. Also, für den Fall der Fälle…
Pénélope Leprevost: Ich habe doch schon ein kleines
Mädchen, das reicht – vorerst.
Kemperman: Pénélope, 2009 sind Sie zum ersten Mal
beim CHIO Aachen gestartet, Kevin, Sie kennen das
Turnier schon. Wie waren Ihre Eindrücke?
Leprevost: Alles, was ich vorher gehört habe, stimmt
nicht nur, es wurde noch übertroffen. Der CHIO ist ein
sehr außergewöhnliches Turnier. Aber wenn man nach
Aachen reist, erwartet man auch schon etwas mehr. Alle
beschreiben Aachen als DAS Turnier in der Welt.
Staut: Sehe ich genauso. Ich bin zum zweiten Mal in
Aachen geritten. Als ich mich 2007 zum ersten Mal auf
den Weg machte, sagten die Leute: „Du wirst sehen, es
ist ein unglaubliches Turnier“. Ich bin dann schon am
Soerser Sonntag angereist und sah die ganzen Menschen,
die über das Gelände liefen. Ich war so beeindruckt davon,
wie viele Menschen einfach nur dort waren, ohne dass die
Prüfungen angefangen hatten.
Frank Kemperman: I didn’t realize that the two of
you were a pair….
Kevin Staut: That wasn’t one of the questions on your
list, was it? (laugh)
Kemperman: No, No, but last year I promised
Meredith that a baby facility would be provided for
in Aachen – just in case …
Pénélope Leprevost: I already have a little girl which is
enough – for the time being.
Kemperman: Pénélope, you competed for the first
time at CHIO Aachen in 2009. Kevin, you were
already familiar with the show. What were your
impressions?
Leprevost: Everything that I had previously heard was
not only verified but was exceeded. The CHIO is a very
special show. When one comes to Aachen the expectations
are higher. Everyone describes Aachen as THE show in the
world.
Staut: I agree. That was the second time that I competed
at Aachen. When I came the first time in 2007, people
said: “You will see, it is an unbelievable show.” I arrived
on Soers Sunday and saw the masses of people walking
about the show grounds. I was very impressed to see how
many people were there when the competitions hadn’t
even started.
Kemperman: Is competing at
Aachen more difficult than
other shows?
Kevin Staut: It is different.
When I examined the diagrams
of Frank Rothenberger’s courses,
I saw how high he would build.
Because Aachen has an unusually

Kemperman: Ist Aachen schwieriger zu reiten als
andere Turniere?
Kevin Staut: Es ist anders. Als ich in die Skizzen von
Parcoursbauer Frank Rothenberger geschaut habe, sah ich,
wie hoch er bauen würde. Aber weil wir in Aachen einen
außergewöhnlich großen Platz haben, können wir viel
raumgreifender galoppieren. So kann man die Sprünge
auch höher bauen als auf anderen Plätzen. Der Galopp ist
anders, wir geben den Pferden mit der Geschwindigkeit
viel Energie und Kraft. Aachen ist der einzige Ort, wo man
so hoch springen kann, auf
jedem anderen Platz wäre das
unmöglich.
Kemperman: Aachen ist berüchtigt
für seine doppelten
Wassergräben. Pénélope, hatten
Sie Angst davor?
Leprevost: Nein, ich bin
eigentlich sehr mutig.
Staut: Pénélope hat niemals
Angst… (lacht) Dazu kommt,
dass unsere französischen
Pferde sehr brav und mutig
sind und eine gute Einstellung
haben. Als ich das erste
Mal in Aachen war, ist mir
aufgefallen, dass viele deutsche
Pferde nervös und empfindlich waren und auch stehen
geblieben sind. Im Rolex Grand Prix sind damals nur
die vier französischen Pferde die Dreifache Kombination
gesprungen, ohne sich ablenken zu lassen.
Kemperman: Was ist in Aachen aufregender, der
Nationenpreis oder der Große Preis?
Leprevost: Der Nationenpreis, schon wegen der Flutlicht-
Atmosphäre. Aber die Stimmung, die wir als Reiter im
Team haben, ist dort auch besser.
Staut: Ja, vor allem letztes Jahr, als wir Deutschland
the gallop. Therefore the jumps can be built higher than at
other facilities. The gallop is different. With the tempo we
give the horses more energy and power. Aachen is the only
place where one can jump so high. It would be impossible
at every other facility.
Kemperman: Aachen is notorious for its double
Liverpools. Pénélope, were you afraid of them?
Leprevost: No, I am actually quite courageous.
Staut: Pénélope is never afraid…(laugh). In addition
our French horses are good natured and bold with a good
attitude. When I was in Aachen the first time, I noticed
that many of the German horses were nervous and sensitive
producing refusals. In the Rolex Grand Prix at that time
it was only the four French horses who jumped the triple
combination without becoming distracted.
Kemperman: At Aachen, which competition is
more exciting, the Nations Cup or the Grand Prix?
Leprevost: The Nations Cup, especially due to the
atmosphere under floodlights. The vibe that we have as

Manche Dinge kann man nicht erklären, aber spüren. Wie zum Beispiel die erstaunlichen Erfolge bei

geschlagen haben (lacht). Da hatten wir eine tolle
Mannschaft und konnten den Nationenpreis ja auch
gewinnen. Und wir haben mit null Fehlerpunkten
gewonnen. Wir sind die letzte Runde zwar noch geritten,
aber wir hatten schon gewonnen. Den Nationenpreis in
Aachen zu gewinnen, Deutschland zu schlagen und mit
einer Punktzahl von Null zu gewinnen, das war einfach
außergewöhnlich.
Leprevost: Das stimmt, Aachen schien immer für die
Deutschen reserviert zu sein. Aber im letzten Jahr hatten
wir einfach einen großartigen Abend.
Kemperman: Kevin, wir haben in Aachen die
besondere Springprüfung „Best of Champions“ mit
Pferdewechsel. Als Europameister sind Sie jetzt einer
dieser Champions. Sie werden gegen Weltmeister Jos
Lansink, Denis Lynch, dem Sieger im ROLEX Grand
Prix Aachen 2009 und Olympiasieger Eric Lamaze
antreten. Freuen Sie sich darauf?
Staut: Ja, sogar sehr, das ist eine tolle Prüfung. Letztes
Jahr konnte ich sie leider nicht sehen. Aber 2007 habe
ich miterlebt, wie das Pferd von Marcus Ehning mit allen
drei fremden Reitern stehenblieb. Und dann hat Marcus
seine letzte Runde mit dem eigenen Pferd freiwillig
abgebrochen, um mit den anderen gleichauf zu sein. Denn
es war ja klar, dass er gewinnen würde, wenn er die Runde
fehlerfrei beendet hätte. Das war für mich ein großer
Moment in einer tollen Prüfung.

Staut: Yes, especially last year, when we beat Germany
(laugh). We had a great team that was able to win the
Nations Cup. And, we won with zero faults. We rode the
last round even though we had already won. To win the
Nations Cup in Aachen against the Germans and with no
faults, that was simply extraordinary.
Leprevost: I agree. Aachen seemed to be reserved for the
Germans, but last year we had a spectacular evening.
Kemperman: Kevin, you know that we have a
special competition in Aachen. That is the “Best of
Champions” with change of horses. As European
Champion you are now one of these champions.
You will be jumping against World Champion Jos
Lansink, Denis Lynch the winner of the 2009
ROLEX Grand Prix of Aachen, and the Olympic
Champion Eric Lamaze. Are you looking forward
to it?
Staut: Yes, very much so. That is a terrific competition.
Unfortunately, I was unable to watch the class last year,
but in 2007 I did see how the horse from Marcus Ehning
refused with all three strange riders. And then Marcus in
the last round with his own horse voluntarily stopped so
that all riders remained even. It had been clear that he

ganz klar.
Staut: Ich auch (lacht). Nein, ernsthaft:
Lassen wir uns überraschen, wer den besten
Tag erwischt.
Kemperman: Was hat sich für Sie nach
den Erfolgen des Vorjahres verändert?
Staut: Wir müssen uns viele Fragen von
Journalisten wie Ihnen anhören… (lacht).
Aber im Großen und Ganzen hat sich gar
nicht so viel verändert.
Leprevost: Ich hoffe sehr, dass ich geblieben
bin wie ich war.
Kemperman: Welchen Stellenwert hat für Sie der
CHIO Aachen 2010 mit Blick auf die WM im Herbst
in Kentucky?
Staut: Einen hohen – Aachen wird das letzte Turnier
vor Kentucky sein. Ich möchte mich und mein Pferd
gut vorbereiten. Ich werde die Saison bis zum CHIO in
Aachen reiten und dann eine Turnierpause bis zu den
Weltreiterspielen einlegen. Also wird Aachen der letzte
Test für mich und mein Pferd vor der WM sein.

me that was a great moment in a super contest.
Kemperman: Who will be Best of Champions this
year?
Leprevost: My bet is clearly on Kevin.
Staut: Me, too (laugh). No, seriously: let us be surprised
who is best on the day.
Kemperman: What changed for you after the
successes of the previous year?
Staut: We have to answer many questions from journalists
such as you…(laugh). But actually not much has changed.
Leprevost: I really hope that I have remained unchanged.
Kemperman: What importance does the CHIO
Aachen 2010 hold for you in reference to the World
Equestrian Games in Kentucky in the fall?
Staut: Very important – Aachen is the last competition
before Kentucky. I want both me and my horses to be well
prepared. I will continue riding through the season to the
CHIO in Aachen and then take a pause from showing until
the World Equestrian Games. Therefore Aachen will be the
last test for me and my horses until the WEG.
