Dressurreiterin, Schlossherrin, Jungunternehmerin:
Victoria Max-Theurer lebt ein eher außergewöhnliches
Leben. Als Tochter der Olympiasiegerin Elisabeth
Max-Theurer kam sie früh mit dem Pferdesport
in Verbindung. Das vergangene Jahr war das
bislang erfolgreichste ihrer jungen Karriere. Dass in Ihrem
Leben dennoch nicht alles nur einfach ist, erzählt die 22-Jährige
im Gespräch mit Niels Knippertz.
Frage: Sie leben in Österreich auf einem Schloss, sind
privilegiert aufgewachsen. Das familieneigene Unternehmen
garantiert Ihnen und Ihrer Familie finanzielle
Unabhängigkeit. Wie groß ist denn der Neid-Faktor
in der Reit-Szene?
Victoria Max-Theurer: Der war schon zu Schulzeiten hoch
und ist es bis heute. Ich stehe viel schneller im Rampenlicht
als andere und bin häufig dem Tratsch ausgesetzt.
Wie gehen Sie damit um?
Max-Theurer: Am Anfang war das sehr schwer. Es wird einfach
sehr viel hinter meinem Rücken geredet. Ich habe gelernt,
vieles gar nicht erst an mich ranzulassen. Ich bin damit
groß geworden und kann es ja eh nicht ändern. Irgendwann
ist es mir dann relativ egal geworden. Über meine Mutter
hatte ich immer die Chance, tolle Pferde zu reiten. >

Dressage rider, chatelaine, young businesswoman:
Victoria Max-Theurer lives a somewhat unusual
life. As the daughter of the Olympic champion Elisabeth
Max-Theurer, she came in contact with
equestrian sports at an early age. In her young career
last year was her most successful year to date. In an interview
with Niels Knipperts the 22 year old tells how not everything
in her life has been easy.
Question: You live in Austria in a castle, grew up privileged.
The family business guarantees you and your family
financial security. How big is the jealousy factor in
the equestrian scene?
Victoria Max-Theurer: During my school days it was alrea-
dy high and still is today. I stand in the limelight much quicker
than others and am often the object of gossip.
How do you handle it?
Max-Theurer: In the beginning it was very difficult. So much
was said behind my back. I learned to ignore most of it. I grew
up with it and can’t change it. At some point I became relatively
indifferent to it. Through my mother I always had the
chance to ride wonderful horses. If they had the chance, what
rider would not take advantage of such a possibility? I consider
myself very lucky to have been born into this life and >

Welcher Sportler würde solche Möglichkeiten nicht nut-
zen, wenn er die Chance dazu hätte? Ich kann mich glücklich
schätzen, dass ich’s so gut erwischt habe mit meinem Leben
und meiner Familie...dessen muss man sich aber immer bewusst
sein, und darf es nicht als selbstverständlich sehen.
Man muss auch etwas machen aus seinen Möglichkeiten,
von alleine geht nichts.
Und reiten müssen Sie schließlich selber – 2007 haben
Sie das äußerst erfolgreich getan. War der Erfolg kalkuliert?
Max-Theurer: Das war überhaupt nicht zu erwarten. Im
Grunde bin ich immer noch fassungslos. Auf einmal darf
man bei den ganz Großen mitreiten, das ist herausragend,
einfach unfassbar.
Ein Grund ist sicherlich Ihre Unbekümmertheit. So waren
Sie 2004 die jüngste Dressurreiterin, die je bei
Olympia gestartet ist…
Max-Theurer: So ein Nesthäkchen-Bonus ist aber irgendwann
auch aufgebraucht und man muss gute Leistungen
immer wieder bestätigen. Aber ich bin in die Große Tour
reingewachsen und habe mich langsam entwickelt.
Und sind jetzt auf dem Weg in den Profi-Sport…
Max-Theurer: Auf keinen Fall. Reiten ist mein Hobby und
soll es bleiben. Es wird nie mein Beruf werden. Ich arbeite an
drei Tagen in der Woche im Familienunternehmen und konzentriere
mich auch darauf. Das Unternehmen ist aber nicht
nur mein Beruf, es ist auch ein toller Ausgleich. So kommt
mir die Disziplin, die ich im Sattel benötige, auch im Job zugute.
Hinzu kommt, dass man sich den Pferdesport auch finanziell
leisten können muss.
Das können Sie doch heute bereits.
Max-Theurer: Das stimmt, aber ich will mir das berufliche
Standbein selber schaffen.
Also im Pferdesport gilt: Amateur statt Profi?
Max-Theurer: Hobby auf hohem Niveau trifft`s wohl am
ehesten.
Können Sie sich noch an ihre sportlichen Anfänge erinnern?
Max-Theurer: Nicht mehr so genau. Geritten bin ich immer,
ich konnte wohl auch erst reiten und habe dann gehen
gelernt. Mit zwei Jahren habe ich mein erstes eigenes Shetland-Pony
gehabt. Das hat
mich auch gleich ordentlich
in den Sand gesetzt – wie
sich das gehört.
Nie Lust aufs Springreiten
gehabt?
Max-Theurer: Na klar habe ich Springen auch ausprobiert
– und direkt ein paar Köpfler hingelegt.
Köpfler?
Max-Theurer: Also kopfüber aus dem Sattel Richtung Sand.
Angst hatte ich aber nie, eher meine Eltern. Ich glaube, mein
Vater hätte es nervlich nicht ausgehalten, wenn ich Springreiterin
geworden wäre. Aber beim Dressurreiten hat es oh-

nehin von Anfang an gepasst, deswegen stellte sich diese Fra-
ge nie.
Die Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit ist aber beim
Springreiten größer.
Max-Theurer: Stimmt, dabei betreiben wir fast noch mehr
Aufwand, da die Ausbildung eines Dressurpferdes sehr viel
breiter gefächtert ist. Ein Springpferd muss nicht so viele verschiedene
Lektionen erlernen.
Qualitätvolle Pferde zu
finden ist aber mit Sicherheit
in beiden Disziplinen
sehr, sehr schwer!
Sie haben auch viele Nachwuchspferde
im Stall. Unter anderem bei der letzten
CHIO-Auktion wurden Sie fündig.
Max-Theurer: Da haben wir ein tolles Pferd gekauft, Brendula,
sieben Jahre alt, ein Bewegungswunder mit wahnsinnig
viel Talent. Meine Mutter hat sie inzwischen Burj al Arab
getauft. Aber wir nennen Sie Bondgirl – das ist eindeutig
leichter auszusprechen.

> my family... nevertheless one must always be mindful and
not take it for granted. One must make something out of
one’s potential, nothing happens on its own.
Ultimately, one must do the riding by themselves - which
you did extremely well in 2007. Were you expecting
that?
Max-Theurer: It was totally unexpected. I can still hardly
believe it. All of a sudden I am riding with the great ones, that
is amazing, simply unbelievable.
One reason is surely your carefreeness. In 2004 you were
the youngest dressage rider to take part in the Olympic
games...
Max-Theurer: So an advantage as the baby in the family has
to end sometime, and one needs to reconfirm through good
performance. I have gradually developed and grown into the
big time.
And are now on the way to becoming a professional...
Max-Theurer: Certainly not. Riding is my hobby and will remain
so. It will never be my career. I work three days per week
in the family business and concentrate on that. The company
is not only my occupation, it is also a great equalizer. The discipline
that is necessary when riding benefits me also on the
job. In addition it provides me a financial basis for the equestrian
sport.
You already have that today...
Max-Theurer: That’s right, but I want to achieve my own occupational
foundation.
So for equestrian sport it is “amateur” instead of “professional”?
Max-Theurer: Hobby on a high level is a better description.
Can you still remember how you got started in the
sport?
Max-Theurer: Not exactly. I have always ridden. I rode before
I learned to walk. I owned my first Shetland pony when I
was two years old. He then proceeded to dump me in the sand
- which is how it should be.
Have you never wanted to be a jumper rider?
Max-Theurer: Sure, I tried jumping - and direct laid down a
few headers.
Question: Headers?
Max-Theurer: Head over heels out of the saddle into the
sand. I was never afraid, rather my parents were. I don’t think
my father’s nerves would have survived my becoming a jumper
rider. On the other hand dressage fit from the very beginning,
and the question never arose.
The public attention is greater for the jumpers.
Max-Theurer: That’s true, although we probably operate
with more outlay, as the training of dressage horses has many
more sides to it. A jumper doesn’t need to learn as many varied
exercises. But, to find quality horses for either discipline
is very, very difficult!
You have several young horses in the stable. In addition
you made a find at the last CHIO auction.
Max-Theurer: We bought a fantastic horse there: Bren- >
