Summary
Bridge designs in Wilhelmsburg Mitte
Renewal of Wilhelmsburg Mitte continues
to make progress. Step by step
the architectural design of the numerous
newbuild projects is emerging and
the open spaces are taking shape. The infrastructure
in this area is also being radically
renewed – from streets and squares to canals
or bodies of water, and the new bridge linking
Mitte to the Wilhelmsburg train station
and station mall.
In connection with the renewal, several
smaller bridges will be built by 2013 as part
of the network of pedestrian and cycle paths.
These seemingly small projects must also
succeed in meeting highest expectations in
terms of quality and design. This is especially
true of the bridges because the intention is
that their combined effect will contribute to
a harmonious yet distinctive look for Mitte.

+The purpose of the consultation procedure
was to ask experts to design all the bridges
for the location with reference to the technical
specifications, and to do so in such a way
that, although recognizably functional elements,
they make an aesthetic statement in
a newly arising urban infrastructure. The objective
of the consultation procedure was
therefore to obtain proposals for individual
bridges that follow a guiding design principle
which could be applied to all other bridges to
be built in Wilhelmsburg Mitte.
The following bridges were the object of the
consultation procedure:
1. Bridge at Gert-Schwämmle-Weg
2. Bridge over the canoe course including a
jetty under the Wilhelmsburger
Reichsstrasse
3. Landscape bridge over the canoe course
4. Landscape bridge in the igs main
walkway
Five teams of experts composed of architects
and engineers were invited to apply
themselves to the task and produce innovative
proposals.
The selection committee, chaired by Hamburg
architect Karin Renner, unanimously
awarded first place to the engineering office
Schlaich Bergermann and Partner from
Stuttgart. The jury’s view was that the winner’s
design would succeed, with very simple
means, in spanning the canals with bridges
that are understated aesthetic highlights.
This would enhance the park with a very
beautiful element, not only for the pedestrians
but also for the canoeists on the water
below. The Stuttgart team’s design, in which
the actual span of the bridge has a filigree
look, was very well received. The bridges fit
neatly into the network of paths in the park
and do not attempt to be showy constructions
in their own right. The details of the
plans also played a big part in convincing the
jury that this design should be recommended
as the planning foundation for all bridges
in Mitte.
