VALIE EXPORT HOMO METER II | 1976
In collaboration with VALIE EXPORT, the Kunsthaus Bregenz selected
for the KUB billboards six black-and-white photos of her artistic
action, HOMO METER II from 1976. In this artistic performance, the
artist tied a loaf of bread to her belly and offered to cut off a slice with
a bread-knife to passers-by on Mariahilferstraße in Vienna. With this
action that drew in the public, the artist investigated the mythology
of processes of civilization and the interpretation of old symbols
today. The sharing of bread immediately on the body of a woman
throws up elementary questions concerning fertility, publicity, and
privacy, vulnerability, motherhood, birth, and transience, and stands
in the context of the discussion regarding feminist theory and practice.
The stark symbolism and emotionality of this action on the street
has lost none of its validity even today, and will be conveyed once
again into the public sphere on the lakeside promenade by the KUB
billboards.
