Merano’s
eternal empress
Meran(o) didn’t really have much
to offer when, in 1870, the restless
Empress Sissi decided to spend
some time in the area for the first
time. That first time she stayed in
Trauttmansdorff Castle, and then
spent the following winter at Rottenstein
Castle in Brunnenplatz/
piazza Fontana. What was quite
unusual for an Empress was the
way she would frequently go for
trips into the Burggrafenamt/Burgraviato,
the area around Meran(o),
and she would often do this alone.
Seventeen years later she came to
Meran(o) for the third time. The
town, certainly due to its fame as
a destination for imperial guests,
had acquired a new look: new buildings
had been and were being
built and more and more tourists
were coming each year. Sissi then
came for the fourth time in 1897,
and by this time Meran(o) was firmly
established as one of the principal
destinations for a discerning
public. Rooms at the Grand Hotel
Kaiserhof were booked a year in
advance. However, Elisabeth decided
to also spend some days at
Lake Geneva and it was there that
she was stabbed to death by an anarchist.
For Meran(o), Empress Sissi
was a godsend. It was very much
because of her stays there that this
most rural of towns developed into
a prestigious town.
