1 Abstract
The EU-guideline 2010/32 provides a legal fundament for the mandatory implementation
of safety-products in hospitals.
A wide range of safety-products is offered by different manufacturers, ranging from
unfunctional prototypes to high-end state-of-the-art products. Judging usefulness and prac-
ticability of safety-products by literature research seems insufficient, as substantial inter-
ventions in clinical routine procedures require sophisticated prearrangement.
According to this prerequisite the best-suited safety-products were to be found in an in-
house testing arrangement and further to be implemented. To reach this goal, established
manufacturers of medical safety-products were invited to provide test samples -
predominantly for venous puncture-, which were tested and analyzed by a cross-functional
team under real life conditions of everyday clinical work. Implementation of the safety-
products focused on intensive employee training and the adaption and creation of standard-
operating-procedures to reach congruence between safety-products and manipulation.
The aim of this paper is to find the best-suited and most user-friendly safety-products,
which allow combined with staff training and standard operating procedures a significant
reduction of the risk of needlestick injuries for the employees. Furthermore, the implemen-
tation of safety-products in the Medical Center West is a core requirement to fulfill the
demands of the EU-guideline 2010/32.
