Sarah Morris spent several months observing the preparation and execution of the<br />
2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Continually accompanied by disputes with Chinese<br />
bureaucracy, she struggled to gain access and permission to fi lm at the games. The<br />
result is a pulsating 86 minute fi lm, which not only paints a picture of the Olympic<br />
Games but also of the booming urban growth in China and the construction of buildings<br />
by ‘star’ architects such as Norman Foster’s T3 at Beijing airport, Herzog &<br />
De Meuron’s ‘bird’s nest’ or Rem Koolhaas’ CCTV Tower. The relationships and apparatus<br />
of power that have shaped the situation in Beijing are subtly unraveled<br />
in Morris’ fi lm.<br />
In her work, which includes fi lm and paintings, the artist presents fast images, architectural<br />
details, people, movements and close-ups, all with her very distinctive aesthetic<br />
vision. The fi lms are scored with soundtracks that reinforce the rhythm of the images<br />
and build up immense tension.<br />
Sarah Morris hat sich über Monate hinweg mit der Vorbereitungs- und Laufzeit<br />
der Olympischen Spiele in Peking 2008 beschäftigt. Vor dem Hintergrund der<br />
Auseinandersetzungen mit der chinesischen Bürokratie erkämpft sie sich den<br />
Einlass zu den Spielen und eine Drehgenehmigung. Das Resultat ist ein pulsierender<br />
86-minütiger Film, der nicht nur die Olympiade zeigt, sondern auch den in China<br />
boomenden Städtebau und die Bauten der Star-Architekten, wie Norman Fosters T3<br />
des Beijing Airports, Herzog & De Meurons „Vogelnest“ oder Rem Koolhaas’ CCTV<br />
Tower. Die Machtverhältnisse und -apparate, die die Situation in Peking bestimmt<br />
haben, werden in Morris’ Film subtil gezeigt und in der Publikation anschaulich<br />
dokumentiert.<br />
